Argentina - July 15th, 2008
supplied by: Andes Outfitters RECORDED:62 °FISHING: Good
Fly fishing in Patagonia in the middle of winter? You bet. Osvaldo Gallardo, one of our guides is fishing the lakes that are open to fishing year round. Even though the weather is cold, there is some good fishing to be found, especially near the outlets or inlets, where trout of all species are concentrated this time of the year. June has been really good and fished well (for winter time) with either streamers or small nymphs. It feels kind of cheating as all these fish concentrated are moving to spawn, on one particular inlet there was a school of large brook trout waiting for the rain to get in and spawn. Osvaldo caught a 9 lb female on a # 8 crystal bugger. Several brook trout of 3 lbs were also caught that day.
On the opposite side of the lake, close to Chime Lodge, pods of large brown trout entered the river. This is a no fish zone, but it was amazing to see these large fish move.
Chimehuin - April 27th, 2008
supplied by: Andes Outfitters RECORDED:0 °FISHING: Good
The migratory brown have finally arrived after a couple of rainy days. They are slowly moving upstream. Our float from town to the confluence with the Alumine produced a few silver brown trout from 18" to 7 lbs. All caught on bead head streamers and floating lines. Most productive areas were 2 km upstream from the confluence.
Malleo - April 24th, 2008
supplied by: Andes Outfitters RECORDED:69 °FISHING: Excellent
We fished the lower Malleo River from the bridge on route 23 to the confluence with Alumine River. Escuelita pool and upstream produced several fish over 20" all on dries and sight fished. There was a brown trout of around 10 lbs. feeding actively on the middle of the river but we couldn't catch it, despite perfect drag free presentations.
We caught an 8 lb brown on an Olive wooly bugger fished deep on Alamos Plateados pool and I lost another large trout that took a Gipsy King # 2 dry fly. Another angler in our party caught and released a 6 lb silver brown that looked and fought like a rainbow trout. Biggest fish was a huge perca that took a # 12 Prince nymph.
Alumine - April 23rd, 2008

Week of March 24 - Junin de los Andes (By Bruce Tyson)
Our party of six consisted of Bruce, John, Jim, Tim, Rob, and Scott - all from the Seattle area. Throughout the week of March 24, we fished the Alumine River, the Chimehuin River, and the Malleo River. Fishing was anywhere from good to excellent in spite of the low, clear water conditions. The big browns had not yet come into the rivers in good numbers due to the lack of rain. The weather all week was sunny and very warm with one day a bit overcast. All of us caught quite a few fish (100 or more each over the week) - mostly rainbows. We caught a lot of rainbows from 20 - 24". The big fish of the week was caught by Scott, a rainbow perhaps in the 26" range. Tim actually laid claim to the big fish since he caught a monster perch (about 10 lbs) but we informed him that "perch don't count". I think most of the guys did best on the Alumine although my favorite was the Chimehuin. We rafted the rivers for the most part although Rob and I waded the Chimehuin and the Malleo on Fri day and Saturday respectively. Rob had a monster hooked on the Malleo in a big deep hole, but that one got away. John and Tim spent a day on one of the lakes looking for a big brown opportunity, but none was to be had. They did catch several smaller browns and some of the Argentinian walleye. They fished from float tubes, although in Tim's case the term "float" tube is used loosely. He kinda sunk. The swimming report was also good. Everybody took a "dip" (or two) except me, but only by the grace of God. A few headers by the Fat Bastards garnered perfect scores of 10. Accomodations in Hotel San Jorge were very good. Food and wine were also good. Best of all were the wonderful guides including head guide Gustavo, Emiliano, Oswaldo, Christian, Aldo, and Roy.
Lago Tromen - February 25th, 2008
supplied by: Andes Outfitters RECORDED:78 °FISHING: Excellent
We fished lake Tromen with excellent results. The Lake was like glass, very calm and you could see trout very deep in the drop offs but large rainbow trout were feeding on dry flies in the middle of the Lake. We tried casting a streamer to the drop off but nothing happened. We then moved to the middle of the lake and Nat Gillespie, from TU, caught the first large rainbow on ad size 14 Adams. We fished these area for a while sight fishing for large rainbows in the middle of the lake and against some impressive cliffs and caught fish up to 8 lbs. It is incredible how strong 5X tippet is!
We moved to the far side of the Lake and fished the reeds in search of large brook trout. These brookies were feeding on large caddis on top but refused to take our immitations, the took however, our streamers fished deep with Teeny 200 lines. Fishing was superb with Lanin volcano reflecting his glaciers on this magnificent lake.
Limay - December 28th, 2007
supplied by: Fly Fishing Patagonia RECORDED:80 °FISHING: Excellent Santa Claus Visits Patagonia -- Dec 07-Jan 08 Holiday Fishing Report
Over the holidays, Fly Fishing Patagonia’s guests received large and numerous gifts from the trout rich waters of Northern Patagonia, Argentina. We had 4 different groups scattered over a warm and pleasant holiday week.
Our private section on the Limay River was fishing average with 20+ fish days and browns and rainbows in the 16-19 inch range. The more experienced anglers all caught fish from 3-7 pounds. However, the fish of the week goes to our friend and well known angler Daniel Beilinson who landed a 12 pound brown trout on 12/29/07. This gorgeous, extremely thick male was well nourished from pancora crabs and prolific December caddis.
On Jan 3 we had famous argentine angler Ricardo Pisarenko return to fish for several days. You may have seen him in various publications. He’s the bearded gentleman smoking a pipe, holding the collectors item rod or shotgun and looking more distinguished then the King of Spain.
But you don’t have to be an accomplish angler to catch fish in Patagonia. Over Christmas, another group floated the Caleufu River for 3 nights, 4 days with Fly Fishing Patagonia guide, Alex Plaza. Here is what one angler had to say:
“Alex was a first rate guide. One of the best I have experienced. Patient, professional, fun, knowledgeable. I brought a lady who had never been fly fishing before and Alex did a fabulous job ensuring that she had a great time while allowing me live out my own fly fishing fantasy. Caught more fish than I expected -30+ fish per day!! and a bunch in the 19-21" range. What a fantastic trip. Top shelf accommodations and dining. Really exceeded my expectations.” Rob Born, 12/30/07
Also on Jan 3 we had 8 beginner and intermediate anglers spread out on different sections of the Rio Manso. All anglers landed multiple rainbows, but the prizes were the nice brown trout in the 18-22 inch range. Several of these browns were caught with dries.
On Jan 2 we had another super day on Fonck Lake with 4 anglers who caught an average of 20 fish each, exclusively on dry flies of various patterns.
Patagonia Argentina still has some of the finest trout fishing in the world. Every angler that leaves us saying it was the best week of fishing they’ve ever had. They also say it was the best trip they have ever done. With that combination, don’t risk your vacation time with another guide service.
Collón-Cura - December 14th, 2007
supplied by: Andes Outfitters RECORDED:63 °FISHING: Excellent
The Collon Cura is one of the most beautiful and productive rivers in the world. It has a lot of different options, from swinging large streamers to dead drifting a # 16 BWO under the willows. We float this river at least twice a week with our customers and it produces lots of trout. During these past weeks and since its still early season, the water was higher than in the summer months but nevertheless it was really easy to fish from a raft and wadeable in most of its runs. We caught lots of fish from 12" to 6 lbs. and fished mostly with a Stimulator and a dropper while drifting until a specific hatch occured. Then we switched to the dry fly de jour. There are some pools that we know are best fished with a heavy sink tip and a streamer. These pools are home to large trout. Biggest trout we caught was a stunning 6 lb brown that fell for a # 16 Parachute Adams. I lost a larger brown while trying to row and reel in.....
Rio Alumine - April 2nd, 2007
supplied by: Andes Outfitters RECORDED:63 °FISHING: Excellent
We floated the Alumine from Pilo Lil to the confluence with the Malleo river during 3 days. The weather was Ok, but it was very windy the first day of the float. We fished mostly with a Stimulator/dropper combo with great success. We caught many rainbow and brown trout from10" to 22" . the highlight however was matching the hatch during mayfly hatches. During one of these hatches I caught an Atlantic Landlocked salmon, my first on the Alumine, it was about 18" but I loved it. He took the stimulator. One client hooked a 5 lb Perca and two really large but skinny rainbows, they were 28" long. We don't see rainbows in this shape until December, but they seemed like they just spawned, strange. Joe Stipe, from VA hooked and released a brown trout estimated at 9 1/2 lbs. he hooked this beauty on a white zonker.
Rio Corcovado - March 21st, 2007
supplied by: Andes Outfitters RECORDED:60 °FISHING: Good
We fished the Corcovado River for 4 consecutive days. Here is a short report of each day and stretch of water:
Day 1: We fished the Mouth (headwaters) of the Corcovado River at Vintter Lake. There were large Brook trout in the first 1/4 of a mile of river, particularly at the bucket right down the Lake. Ed Redman, from NC hooked an estimated 6 lb brookie on a redfish fly fished deep on a Teeny 200 line. This was the only large fished hooked (and lost at the net). Jim Melton, also from NC hooked and released 4 or 5 16" rainbows caught on a # 10 stimulator, fishing on the riffle below the bucket. We moved downstream 1/2 mile and we caught more 10" to 14" rainbows. No brook trout at all. A fellow angler who fished further downstream, where the fiver is deeper and with lots of underwater vegetation hooked and released a few brookies in the 16" to 20 " range.
Day 2: Today we fished a stretch of water right below the last bridge that crosses the river on the road to Chile. We floated aprox. 10 km of river. One angler caught 20 + fish between 16" to 24", mostly rainbows on dry flies and nymphs. We saw a bunch of Chinook salmon that were almost black in color and didn't seem to bother with our offerings. This stretch of water, inaccesible to most anglers (we have the keys to the Ranch) is unbelievable beautiful and productive. Other anglers in our party hooked and released a few brown trout, all caught on sink tip lines and streamers.
Day 3: After a long ride to the mouth of the Corcovado we found it unfishable due to high winds and large waves. We drove back to Poncho Moro som 20 km upstream from the town of Corcovado and hooked and released rainbow and brown trout from 14" to 20". Still no monsters in sight (fish over 5 lbs.)
Day 4: Today we floated from Poncho Moro to El Palenque (10 km float). The fishing was good but we had to walk the rafts a lot due to low water and overgrown vegetation. Fishing was tough with a few small rainbow and brown trout from 12" to 20".
Rio Nant-Y-Fall - March 12th, 2007
supplied by: Andes Outfitters RECORDED:82 °FISHING: Excellent
We had excellent fishing at the mouth of the Nant-y-fall river at Lake Rosario. Fishing was very technical. Large trout seem to ignore our dry flies while actively feeding on unidetifiable flies. We managed to catch two rainbow trout of 24" + on # 20 Griffiths Gnats and one 5 lb rainbow on a San Fermin Muddler and sink tip line. It very exciting to watch large trout cruise all around our rafts and take this tiny flies with abandon.
