Magic Reservoir - May 1st, 2005
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters FISHING: Good Fishing Season Outlook May 2005
Opening Day - May 28
"What pleasure has fallen to our lot! Yes, there was joy in the anticipation of the trip, in overhauling the equipment and supplying deficiencies. What zest in planning the trip and making engagements of guide and quarters. Long sketches of precious enjoyment could be read from the leaves of the fly-book, and certain flies seemed almost alive and anxious to drop into old haunts." ~ D H Bruce ~ "Favorite Flies and Their Histories"
Season Synopsis Now is certainly the time of year to begin planning your trout fishing season. The area waters will make a quick transition from cool, cloudy, spring thaw, to prolific bug factories resplendent with healthy, hungry trout. Start gathering, or tying, your favorite Green Drake patterns, Brown Drake patterns, P.M.D.s, Salmon Flies, Baetis and Crane Flies. Similar to last season, precipitation averages for the Big Wood drainage hover in the 70% range. Considering the mild Winter and Spring, be sure of two things; hatches will begin earlier in the season and the time frame from opening day through mid-July will be the season's best fishing.
Looking ahead, Silver Creek fished very well in the early winter season, with plenty of fish showing up in good numbers through the lower reaches. Even now, an angler can go down and see major midge hatches with pods of rising trout. No, we can't fish for them yet, but what better way to spend a day on the weekend than walking your favorite dog up the banks of the Creek locating the major populations of fish.
The Lost, the Big Wood and the Little Wood all look to be on par with the fisheries we saw last year. Look for some improvement in the Copper Basin area as Trout Unlimited continues to nurse this fishery back to its former glory.
In the meantime, there is plenty of action to sharpen one's skills and keep a line wet. The thaw has happened on our area's reservoirs. Look to these still water fisheries on calm evenings for some awesome surface activity. Midge hatches and bait are targets of big reservoir trout, and that magic hour in the spring months can produce very memorable evenings. Look at Magic and the Little Wood Reservoirs for the best opportunities. Fish from a float tube, boat or the shore -all can be productive.
The Little Wood River below the Silver Creek confluence is open to fishing this month. Hatches of giant Salmon Flies will bring a few fish to the surface - even when the water is cloudy.

Anderson Ranch Reservoir - April 26th, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters FISHING: Good
The reservoirs are still the number one game this time of year, as local rivers and streams are closed until the last Saturday of the month. This sets our opener for May 29th. April weather started with record highs, and the end of the month has turned cool and wet. We need it after the warming trend took part of our snow pack with it. It would be relatively safe to say that we will access most area rivers the first week of June. The reservoir situation was outstanding last month. The Little Wood Reservoir fished as good as it gets at ice out, and the great fishing lasted throughout the spring; until the reservoir reached its fill line last week. Fish are still there to be caught, but many fish are in spawning mode. As they finish the spawn expect voracious feeding patterns. This will most likely occur in the next week or two.
Anderson Ranch Reservoir This body of water is an hour and a half away, but offers more diversity of fish than any other nearby lake or reservoir. Rainbow Trout, Kokanee, Crappie, Perch and Bass can all be found here. Bank anglers can try fishing from the dam, where many of these fish may be caught. It is also a good place to find the evening rise as temperatures warm. Boat anglers have a big advantage here, as they are able to access bays, creek mouths, and just more water, increasing the odds of finding the bite. Fish buggers at a variety of depths, for trout and concentrate on rocky shorelines for warm water species.
