Big Hole River - July 11th, 2004
supplied by: Montana Troutfitters
FISHING: Fair
The Flows at Melrose Montana are 809 C.F.S.  The river has dropped quite a bit over the past few days and the fishing should be picking up.  Over the past couple of weeks there has been a good bit of rain in the Bighole Valley and the river remained fishable but it was on the rise.  Flows as of this time last week were around 1400 C.F.S. and the fishing was pretty slow.  There was good hatch activity with a mix of PMD's, Caddis and Yellow Sallies in the morning with caddis activity in the evening as well.  We fished the river on Thursday and it was very slow.  We did manage to rangle a few fish on dries, a few on droppers and some on Streamers fished on a very slow retrieve.  All in all the fishing was fair at best.  Our last trip went out on the river on Wednesday July 7th and they experienced some of the same fishing.  Since then the river has dropped and I would not hesitate to head to the Bighole.  It should catch fire with the dropping flows.  If you are heading over to the river with any out of state guest be sure and check the regulations because there are some very poor regulations that limit non resident anglers from floating on certain sections over the weekend!!!!

The Flows at Melrose Montana are 1030 C.F.S.  The Salmonfly hatch is done for this year and it was pretty much a bust.  The flows are dropping and it may be a short year on the Bighole this year.  Water restrictions are going into affect in Butte to try and help keep water in the river for the Artic Grayling.  Currently the river is fishing great with caddis and pmd's hatching on a consistent basis.  The good ole parachute adams has been producing some great results as are other pmd and caddis imitations.

The stonefly saga continues..... first of all, I apologize for the lack of reports since earlier this month. My office time has been greatly reduced by the number of fishermen visiting this valley. Top that off with the fact that I am much better at sitting on the deck with a cold one than working with my computer and you have a recipe for late evening cocktails, and out of date fishing reports. Enough about my life though - and on to the fishing. At this point, it doesnt really matter wich launch you use on any of our local rivers - you will see bugs of some sort, and catch fish with a variety of techniques.

The Big Hole is dropping and running clear, the Beaverhead is producing its normal oversized, size 20 pmd eating browns, and the Madison is covered up with salmonflies. The big bugs are out, and although the fish seem a bit gorged with the nymphs they are definately starting to look up for a floating meal. You will find that the dead drifted fly may not produce as well as say, one that is twiched and stripped. Drag free is definately not an issue over there. The next two weeks should be stellar fishing over on the Maddy as the adults start hatching and coming back to the water to drop eggs. As of today, there are bugs from Story ditch down to Ennis. On the Big Hole, there are yellow sallies, pmd's, green drakes and a few caddis fluttering around - it seems the fish flat dont care at times what you throw at them.

The Flows at Melrose Montana are 2190 C.F.S. The river came up some with the heavy rains that we had on Thursday and Friday.  Clarity on Friday morning was about two feet.  I would expect that the clarity will improve over the weekend and we may see some nice water by sunday.  The Salmonfly hatch flew up the river in record time this year and the fishing for the hatch was for the most part a bust.  There are still bugs out flying but the bulk of the hatch flew the river system within a few days.  It is time to look past the salmonflies and start concentrating on the other hatch activity that takes place in the early summer months.  Yellowsallies, goldenstones, pmd's and caddis will dominate the hatch activity and you can have some great dry fly fishing on the Bighole after the Salmonfly hatch is over.  It doesn't appear that the outlook for the summer is too promising on the Bighole so if you like to fish it you should get over there while it still is flowing decent flows and the fish are happy.

The migration of the stonefly - giant stones, golden stones, yellow sallies - they are all going off right NOW on the Big Hole river. We have fished every inch of river between East Bank and Glen over the last week, and had the same success up and down the river. Pockets of feeding fish, and stoneflies - here and there a few caddis left around. Not ALL the action is on top, but if you stick with it you will hit banks that are an absolute risefest. We will more than likely see a "second coming" of the bugs later this week, as the crick rose a bit over the last few days, and put the proverbial keibosh on the hatch. The trout still know what they are after, but there isnt a bunch of bugs on the water - which can be a good thing.

FISHING: Good
The Flows at Melrose Montana are 1110 C.F.S. The Salmonfly hatch is underway with the bulk of the hatch somewhere between Browns and the Notch. The low flows will make for some interesting Salmonfly fishing this year. All that I can tell you is that you will just have to get over and give it a try. I would expect the fish to be a little further from the banks with the lower water. The bugs may also make a quick run through the system or hatch all along the river once they really get going. This weekend will be a busy one on the river and if you are fishing with out of state guest be sure and check the fishing regulations. There are some very unfavorable regulations in regards to non resident anglers on the Bighole and you will want to make sure that you are not on a stretch of water that is limited by the regulations. Be sure and have all your proper equipement in your boats because you will most likely run into the wardens who will be checking your boats over the weekend. Have fun on the river.

Big Hole River - May 29th, 2004

FISHING: Great
The Flows at Melrose Montana are 1320 C.F.S. The Bighole is clear and fishing very well. The Salmonflies are out on the very lower reaches of the river. The latest report is the bugs are between Notch Bottom and Pennington Bridge The upper river has some decent hatches of Blue Winged Olives, Gray Drakes, Goldenstones and Caddis. Each hatch has been day to day so don't go over expecting to see all the formention bugs. The Salmonfly hatch should be fair this year as the flows are going to be low and the river most likely won't be up in the Willows all that much. We will have to see how it progresses though. The weather has been so strange that I don't know if anything is going to make sense or be predictable this summer.

First of all, let me apologize for the lack of virtual fishing reports over the last month. We have been busier than the proverbial one legged man in a snake stomp. As we sit here on this beautiful spring day in Montana, the cabins are finished, the lawn is coming in, the caddis have come and left, the drakes are hatching, the big stones are getting active, and the trout are hungry!

We have had some great "catching" over the last month. Almost never leaving the lower Big Hole, we have caught fish, lots of them by the way, on every technique possible on the fly. We are having a nice wet spring, with afternoon clouds and showers - and the hatches are like clockwork. Grey Drakes, March Browns, Baetis, and a few remnants of the blizzard Mothers Day Caddis hatch are still bringing fish to the dry fly.

As far as the dead drift nymphing and streamer fishing - three words - OH MY GOD. Catches upwards of 20 fish per angler have been common, with some great fish in the mix. Nymphing small mayfly imitations behind the ever steady yuk bug has been the ticket- and dont forget the san juan worm.

We hosted a trip from Washington's Evening Hatch Flyshop and Guide Service, the first of many to come, and had a great time. Jay, Evan, Gene, Bob, and of course Jack Mitchell got in on some Caddis fishing that most people only hear about. The third day of the trip the streamer fishing below the Notch was downright ridiculous. I dont know if Jack can tie a streamer on without thinking of that day.

At any rate, as far as the forecast, it is anyones guess as to when we will see runoff. Some say we have seen part of it, all of it, or its not going to happen. As we talk about it, the Big Hole is on the rise. My personal outlook is that we will miss a few days of fishing on the river over the next week or two, but I dont envision a massive 11,000 cfs deluge like we had last year. There is still quite a bit of snow to come out of the high country, but with the cool weather pattern we are in, its not coming out very fast, which is a good thing!
