Barrier Dam to Blue Creek
Fishing this stretch of the Cowlitz is probably one of the best stretches of river to fish in the state as far as having very good shots at a steelhead on a fly. There is plenty of water to fish even on crowded days and you can finish up the day with a lot of very nice sized cutthroat, up to 18+ inches.
This day we had two boats with 4 clients, fished from 9 am to 6 pm, and hooked 3 steelhead and landed one about 7 pounds on a black egg sucking bunny leech. The others were hooked on a purple marabou and purple egg sucking leech.
The October Caddis are all over the place down there and the fish are coming up for dries during certain parts of the day but are taken with regularity on stripped streamers. Hares ears, soft hackles and stoneflies greased lined through steelhead looking water also produced.
This river should fish well into late November for steelhead and cutthroat and by then the salmon will be thick in here as well. Stop by the shop and we will hook you up with all the patterns you need to successfully fish the Cowlitz for steelhead, cutthroat and silvers.
