The Cowlitz is still slow but starting to pick up for both springers and late steelhead. Springers are through out the whole river but not in large quanities yet. Biting today but not tomorrow has been the normal response with all the anglers, I spoke with this past weekend. Looking on the bright side its still early and the best springer fishing is yet to come. A friend of mine fished from the bank at Barrier dam Monday had a fisherman trifecta 2 springers and a steelhead. As I've written before don't give up on the COWLITZ the fun has just begin.

The fishing on the Cowlitz river has been as poor as a local pro baseball team was in the 1980's. However just as the baseball teams fans never gave up, so should the fans of the Cowlitz river. Springers are just around the corner they should start to enter into the Cowlitz as the month goes by. With the same anticipation as a baseball fan for a home run ball, we can think that the summer run steelhead should be coming up next. So don't give up on the Cowlitz it could start to hit balls out of the park at any time. You just have to be at river to catch them.

Well I thought that the fishing would have picked up but I was wrong, it got worse. I spoke with the hatchery manager last weekend and he just threw his arms in the air and said I wish I new where these late fish are at, maybe mid March. Well we can all hope, but on the bright side we can think SPRINGERS!!!!!! I hope we get as many fish as they hatchery claims are going to come back this season. If they do hang onto you rods. We should be able to take early summer run as well as springers from April on, So don't give up on the good ole COWLITZ as it will start to give up fish soon. Hello from the beautiful Cowlitz river, today we are running at 7500 cfs. I've got about 14 inches of visibilty,and I have been very stingy with the fish. I hope as the month goes by, I will let more fisherman catch more of my fish. My good friend Dave Baugh from XLT Guide Service has had some very choice words with me lately. However he keeps coming back and predicts good summer run fishing this year. He told me he has some choice dates still availible if anyone one is looking for a trip down me this summer.
