Deschutes River - Lower - November 3rd, 2007
supplied by: The Flyfishers Place
FISHING: Good
Well, this is a good time of year on the Deschutes. Trout fishing is picking up now that the weather is cooler. Steelhead are viable from the Mouth all the way up to Warm Springs. Nymphing for trout with a 6 wt is a good idea because you may hook a Steelie and having a little extra "wood" to lay on 'em helps. Keep an eye out for Fall hatches. Expect water levels to be higher than normal for the rest of the season.
Please be aware of spawnig beds... it may be tempting to wade out to redds that have fish spawning -- BUT if you want the Deschutes to continue being a blue ribbon trout stream AND great steelhead fishery, respect the beautiful Steelies, trout, and precious few Chinook. We all want our great-grandkids to enjoy this river, don't we ?
TRIBAL WATERS (DRY CREEK TO TROUT CREEK) ARE CLOSED NOW AND REOPENS IN APRIL 2008 !
DRIES: BWOs, Henryville Caddis, Mahogany Duns, Yellow comparadun, Rusty Spinner, Paraschute Adams. NYMPHS: Copper John, soft hackles, peasant tail, Angle Case emerger, sparkle pupa, serendipity, prince, green rock worm,October caddis nymphs, wooly buggers (on sinking line!!).STEELIES: Green butt skunk, macks canyon, a-leach, wally walker, red-winged blackbird, Freight Train

FISHING: Fair
Steelhead: Steelhead fishing is spotty at best. The numbers of fish are good above Sherars Falls, and still plenty of fish below. All season long the Steelhead have been moving briskly through the Deschutes, traveling 2 to 6 miles a day. This is due to the great water conditions. Water temperature is 53*, which is very good, you can still stick with your dry line techniques, and the river level is 4,300 CFS from the Pelton dam near Warm Springs. This is just a bit higher than normal, which usually moves fish in a little bit closer. As you fish a run, try staying a little closer to the bank. That way you won’t risk the chance of spooking fish out of there resting spot. The fish still need to settled down. Small pods, or groups, of Steelies seem to be moving through resting areas quickly, not being very focused on flies that inter there resting territories. Making sure you slow your fly swing speed down as much as possible. This will help to get the fish interested in the fly, and then follow it. Use flies that have a little flash on them during low light conditions, and dull fly colors when the sun is on the water. Think about using a sink tip to get the fly lower in the water columns if the sun is directly in there eyes. Have fun! To keep updated on steelhead movement up the Columbia River, and over Sherars Falls, click on “FISH COUNTS” on this site. Also, be sure to check out our great deals in the Specials section of fisheyesoup. Red Side Trout: Trout fishing is fair. October Caddis still hatching in good numbers, should continue for the next two weeks or so. Redside Trout will key in on the emergent stage in the late afternoons. Fish those pupa’s deep, just like a Stone fly nymph. The free living caddis and Small case building caddis are also still hatching late morning through the afternoon. Fish mostly larva and pupa unless you see risers, then switch up. Morning is the best time to work spent caddis patterns in the slack water and back eddies from 10 AM to 1 PM. Try the tree lines and steep bank runs with dries and wets. Have an assortment of Pupas and Emergers, and don’t forget those all important Diving Caddis, Spent Caddis, and Spent Partridge caddis patterns. Midges this time of year will hatch off and on in the morning and late afternoons. Best sizes to use 18, 20, and 22. The Fall generation of the Blue Wing Olive may flies will continue there hatch cycle until the end of November. They’re a size 20 and will hatch after 11 AM for about an hour or more. Fishing the film would benefit you the most, in back eddies, beep runs along the steep banks, and slow water below riffles. Current Hatches on the Deschutes River are: MAY FLIES: BWO’s, Size 18 or 20 CADDIS: October Caddis size 8, Igloo Case Building, Size 16 or 18, Net Building, Size 16 or 18. STONE FLIES:None CRANE FLIES: Crane Fly’s, Size 16 MIDGE: Midge pupa Size 18 or 20 Check out our “HATCH CHART” for more. Fly Patterns you should have: Fall Caddis Pupa, 8, Igloo Case Building Caddis, size 18 or 20, Crane Flies, size 16n or 18, and Midge, size 18 to 22. Make sure that you have some Rusty Spinners, size 16 or 18, emerger patterns like Soft Hackles, Caddis Pupas, and don’t forget those Cripple Patterns. Other useful fly patterns are, Bead Head CDC Prince Nymph 10 ~ 12, light bright dubbed Soft Hackle (green), bright green sparkle Green Rock Worms, and Silvey’s Prime Pupa’s, Lighting Bugs size 14, Zug Bugs size 14, King Prince Nymph, size 12~16 and a red, green and gold Copper John’s 16 ~ 18s, and a wire bodied Prince Nymph size 10, in black, red, or green. Deschutes Water Conditions: Water temperatures are between 53 degrees, color is clear. White River Water Conditions: Color is glacier grey / light green, not effecting the Deschutes. We will open our private lakes again on September 10th, Fall is beautiful at the ranch and the fishing can be quite good! Click on "Private Lakes" for more info. FISHING: Good
MADRAS 5010cfs MOODY 5750cfs
Trout fishing continues to be great with the pressure light (everybody is fishing for steelhead!) Blue wing olive hatches on overcast days have been nothing short of great! I watched a october caddis bounce of the surface every three feet right along the bank and downstream for about thirty feet and every time the caddis hit a trout was swirling at it-I'm guessing it was the same fish but who knows. Pretty cool. Some of your smaller leftover salmonflys should work fine for this hatch. It's an isolated deal though. Don't throw the big bugs all day but if you see a bunch around toss it out there!
We had a big rain last week 1 1/4 inches overnight! That and the irrigation canals shutting off put a lot of water in the Deschutes. Fishing for us was pretty good on the rise--than we woke up and I got in my boat and i couldn't see half way down my oars in the water--uh oh! It shut the fishing down for a bit but now it seems to have settled and fishing is improving. We have been upriver lately and I have heard different things about the white river over the last little bit from not that bad to bad so make sure and get a hold of the guys at the Deschutes canyon fly shop in Maupin if you are headed that way.

FISHING: Great
Lower Deschutes
I just got through with a 4 day float from Warm Springs to Harpham. I went with 2 good friends of the shop and High Desert Drifters. HDD puts on one of heck of a trip. Jeff and Scott are true professionals and great hosts. I think I gained 10 pounds in the time I was on the river. Bill H and Craig M were my partners in crime. The pressure was light and the fishing was outstanding.
We did not see another boat the middle two days of the float so we were able to cherry pick our spots. Craig was on his second steelheading experience ever and his first spey rod experience and ended up landing several fish. Bill has only been fly fishing for a year and a half but is a total steelhead junkie. He’s my kind of guy. In all, we touched close to 40 steelhead with close to half that brought to hand. I caught one B run fish just above White Horse going over 10 pounds. All the other fish were in the 4 to 7 pound range. I fished my Z Axis 12'6" 6 wt whenever the wind died down enough to let me. What a stick that is. It made the average Deschutes fish feel like a trophy. When the wind did come up, I switched over to the 13'6" 7 wt Z axis with a type 3 sink tip. I am amazed at how easy it is to throw those rods. If you are considering a spey rod at all, you need to try these. I used our stinger hook flys and am amazed at the landing ratio with that hook. If you stick the fish, you just don’t lose them. Stop in and let us show you how to tie them.
Good fishing

Deschutes River - Lower - October 17th, 2007

FISHING: Fair
Floated the Warm Springs to Trout Creek stretch of the Lower Deschutes on Monday. The water was clear and in good shape running around 4,500 cfs and 55 degrees. There were more boaters than I expected in the upper stretch with 17 (that we counted) other boats on the water. It was a great day for steelheading with overcast skies and cool temps. The fishing wasn’t quite as good as the day felt, but I did hook and land a nice wild fish that took my Marabou Stinger fly with a hammering strike and then thrashed across the surface of the river. The wild fish finally calmed down and allowed me to land her and remove the hook. She was a beautiful chrome bright fish and was around 29 inches long. We only had one other grab that day and it rained for the last hour of our float, but it was still a lot more fun than most Mondays.

FISHING: Good
The Lower Deschutes still continues to show nothing but improvement for steelhead. The cooler cloudy and wet weather is helping the fish move up further in the river. Nymphing seems to be the most productive method so far, however we've been swinging some up as well. It's looking to be a pretty good this year for steel on the D.
