Deschutes River - Lower - August 20th, 2007

FISHING: Good
Hey all you fly fishin nuts. Jay here to tell all of you about our trip down to the Lower D. Cathy and I took. We camped for two nights down below Maupin. The fishin during the first day was fun in the sun. We nymphed most of the day and caught a few trout. Earlier in the day I was swinging through a run while Cathy nymphed behind me for trout and didn’t touch a thing. Cathy decide to go back to the truck when I was done swing, so I decide to try my hand for a trout with the nymphin rig. By the time she got back to the truck I had a hook-up. It was a steelhead that burned my finger when it took off. I ended up landing the native on my 5wt. rod and had Cathy take a pic. The next day it was cloudy and a little rainy. Perfect for fly fishin nuts like us. I ended up landing some big trout that day on golden stone nymphs and soft hackles. All in all it was great to get out of town for the weekend and to know the steelhead are making their way up.
Have a grateful day,

FISHING: Great
During warm weather, be prepared to deep nymph during the day, however, we have been doing well on dries during the day on seams, back eddies, and foam lines using caddis, PMD, attractor dries and emergers. You may have to hunt hard for risers during afternoons when it's over 90 degrees. Look for dryfly action to pick up considerably once the sun is off the water which is around 6, depending on where you are in the canyon. If you don't see risers, move to nymphs as this can be deadly. In addition, keep an eye out for PMDs and PEDs. Mayfly spinners at dusk are a good bet. Tan/Brown/Green caddis are hatching as well. At those times when multiple mayflies and/or caddis are hatching, try an attractor pattern like a purple haze, purple comparadun, or good ol' parachute adams. Nymph with mid-sized stonefly and october caddis point flies and use droppers in the #10-20 range. STEELHEAD mostly in the Macks to Mouth stretch and these fish are chrome and hot!! Fishable numbers of steelies are as high up as Jones Canyon. The area around Maupin has way more steelhead anglers than steelhead. Wait a few more weeks for consistantly productive steelhead fishing around Maupin. Dries: X-Caddis, Henryville, CDC Caddis, Yellow comparadun, Light Cahill, Rusty Spinner, Paraschute Adams. Nymphs: Copper John, soft hackles, peasant tail, Angle Case emerger, sparkle pupa, serendipity, prince, green rock worm,October caddis nymphs, wooly buggers (on sinking line!!).STEELIES: Green butt skunk, macks canyon, a-leach, wally walker, red-winged blackbird, Freight Train

FISHING: Great
Trout fishing on the Lower Deschutes has been producing some nice fish on caddis flies. Pretty much all day has been productive. Fishing the backeddies with elk hair caddis and PMD should be good. Steelhead fishing is definitely getting there, we are seeing good numbers early, of both fish and people.

FISHING: Great
There are some steelhead being caught down low and the river is in great shape below the white river! low sixty degree temps in the morning and mid sixties in the afternoons. This cooler weather that we are getting is great right now. Trout fishing has been nothing short of awsome with the fish stacking up in the tree lined banks and eddies along the river. Shade is a big factor this time of year and will continue to be for the rest of this month and the begining of september! Caddis are the main show with Ped's in the afternoon ,some yellow sallies and aquatic moths(caddis enhancer) to keep the fish looking up. Caddis in all stages from size 14-20 should be in your box in green and brown as fish have seen a lot of anglers by this time in the year and you need to have some choices.

Caddis and PMDs rule now. Its a caddis show for the next couple of months down here. The cooler weather expected for this week should improve the dry fly fishing during the day. FISHING: Great
Its a caddis show for the next couple of months down here. It seems at times that the hotter the day, the more intense the caddis hatch are at night. The times when the sun is off the water, dawn-10 am and 5pm-dark can have amazing dryfly action. During the heat of the day, deep nymphing is the rule. However, keep your eyes on the foam lines and eddies, fish will rise all day if they feel safe.
