Red Side Trout:

There are now plenty of caddis hatching. Most of the emergent stages are happening in the evenings. The morning is the best time to work spent caddis patterns in the slack water and back eddies. Throughout the day you will sometimes see clouds of them. Fish along the tree lines and steep bank runs with dries and wets.
Good numbers of Aquatic Moths are hatching also, and should fish well in the evenings
A great fly to use to imitate a resting Aquatic Moth, Spent Moth,  or  spent Caddis, is a Partridge Caddis pattern. Fish these flies in back eddies and slack water against the banks where the water is 3 feet or more in depth. Another really good water type is the choppy seam on the edge of some fast water.
For Caddis, you should carry some Elk Hair Caddis, olive and tan, size 16 & 18,  X-Caddis, olive body, size 16, American Grannums, green body, size 16,  and Micro Caddis, black, size 18s & 20s.
Have an assortment of Pupas and Emergers, and don’t forget those all important Diving Caddis, Spent Caddis, and Spent Partridge caddis patterns.
The PMD’s are starting to fade, but be prepared to have some other good May flies on hand. You will need some PEDs (Pale Evening Dun) size 10 or 12. Those hatch from 3 to 6 PM, and the Little Yellow Mays, size 16, that hatching from the middle  of the morning till midday.
The fish are getting fussy, so extend your tippets, and switch fly patterns often.
The mornings are starting to show signs of improvement, around 9 AM
the activity starts in with some trout looking up to spent mays and caddis. Check the foam lines for sipping rise forms and fish spars patterns to them.  The results will amaze you.

The Little Yellow Stone ( Little Yellow Sallys ) are a size 16, and get over looked by anglers.
They start hatching in may and usually continue to hatch until August. They are a very important food order for the trout. Try these flies off and on throughout the day, along the bank and tree lines, but I think the better time is afternoon till dark.

Midges this time of year will hatch off and on in the morning and late afternoon. Fish some midges in sizes 18, 20, and 22.
Fishing the film would benefit you the most, in the back eddies, beep runs along the steep banks, and slow water below riffles.

FISHING: Good
Its a caddis show for the next couple of months down here.  It seems at times that the hotter the day, the more intense the caddis hatch are at night.  Real hot weather is ahead so plan on 100 degrees during the day.  The times when the sun is off the water, dawn-10 am and 5pm-dark can have amazing dryfly action.  During the heat of the day, deep nymphing is the rule.  However, keep your eyes on the foam lines, fish will rise all day if they feel safe.
In addition, keep an eye out for PMDs and PEDs.  Mayfly spinners at dusk are a good bet.  Tan/Brown/Green caddis are hatching as well.  At those times when multiple mayflies and/or caddis are hatching, try an attractor pattern like a purple haze, purple comparadun, or good ol' parachute adams.  Nymph with smaller stuff in the #10-20 range.  Summer Steelies should start showing up at the Mouth in fishable numbers by mid-July

Dries: X-Caddis, Henryville, CDC Caddis, Yellow comparadun, Light Cahill, Rusty Spinner.
Nymphs: Copper John, soft hackles, peasant tail, Angle Case emerger, sparkle pupa, serendipity, prince, green rock worm, swing wooly buggers (on sinking line!!).

Steelhead & Red Side Trout reports:

Red Side Trout:

We are into summer weather now and seeing a lot of good things with the Caddis and May fly hatches. The morning hours are showing us some May fly spinner falls and O depositing Caddis flies which end up dead in the slow water against the bank or your favorite back eddies in those very important foam lines.

The mid day action is still mostly may fly duns, PMDs and PEDs, so make sure you have

some of these in different styles, like emerges and cripples etc… The evening has a good showing of Caddis in the emerging stage and the diving egg lying stage. This can be a lot of fun to try different techniques like, fishing caddis pupas, resting adults, or swinging a diving Caddis pattern down stream to entice these trout to do the GRAB!!

Don’t forget about our little Yellow Stone fly friends, they’ll be out and about for the next month, month and a half, and they can save the day for some.

Fish small flies with 5X on and in the film and extend your tippet lenghts to help you get long natral drifts. On the other hand if the fish don't respond to that, try swinging some wet fly patters to mimic emerging caddis and may flies. Have Fun!!!!  If Q’s, Call!

We will be happy to answer anything for you.

Trout fishing has almost ended the transistion from salmonfly-golden stonfly season to pmd and caddis season. The wonderful thing is that the transition is going great. Although we had some spotty fishing in the last week the moments of glory were nothing short of great and made up for the duldrums! You can still get away with goldens and salmonflys on the one day stretch out of warm springs but that wont last mutch longer. Another sneaky little critter that people forget about down here is craneflys. I talked to a friend of mine (yes I have one)  the other day that said everything in the world was coming down at him midges, salmonflys, pmd spinners, goldesn stones, little yellow sallies and they would not eat anything but the cranefly's. I believe him I have only seen it once but definitly something to think about and worth having some yellow, red, and tan cranefly imitations in the box in size 14-16. Spot fishing has become alot more fun as of late. As the fish get keyed in on these little bugs they sit right under the surface sip their meals as you watch from the bank. What is more fun fishing for that fish or being the guy from the bank watching it? It is really cool to watch how the trout respond to your offerings as well as how they move in the ever changing currents and surges of this beautiful river.

Salmonflys are slowing down as well as the golden stones. Caddis,PMD's,PED's, little yellow sallies, craneflys, and moths will start to become a major factor in the coming weeks! The aquatic moths are really cool on the deschutes! You would think they are a caddis until you pick one up! They cake the trees for a week or two! I would love to hear if you get into those bugs! anyway fishing is good down here right now!!!!!!!!!

I debated giving the Lower D a "great," as the Warm Springs to Trout Creek section is heating up!  After floating the river for about ten days with swarms of salmonflies and golden stones buzzing around and little action, the fish seem to be keying in on this exciting hatch more and more the last couple of days.  Better late than never!!   In addition, keep an eye out for PMDs and PEDs.  Mayfly spinners at dusk is a good aleternative to salmonflies if the fish are not cooperating.  Tan/Brown/Green caddis are hatching as well.  Cool mornings may still see small but intense BWO hatches.  At those times when multiple mayflies and/or caddis are hatching, try an attractor pattern like a purple haze, purple comparadun, or good ol' parachute adams.  The fish are pretty much off the big stonefly nymphs so try with smaller stuff in the #10-20 range.  Trout Creek to Maupin has alot of PMDs and caddis.  Summer Steelies should start showing up at the Mouth in fishable numbers by mid-July

Dries: Salmonflies (#4-8): Rogue Foam Stone, Low Hanger Stone, orange stimi.  Goldens (#6-10): Clark's Stone, Bank Robber, Yellow stimis.  Others: X-Caddis, Henryville, CDC Caddis, Yellow comparadun, Light Cahill, Rusty Spinner.
Nymphs: Copper John, soft hackles, peasant tail, Angle Case emerger, sparkle pupa, serendipity, prince, green rock worm, swing wooly buggers (on sinking line!!).

Sorry about the short report--that should tell you something! Fishing is good with salmonflys and golden stoneflys dominating the scene! A little crowded this weekend.........Holy! Fishing will hopefully just get better as they key in on these enormous morsels over the next couple weeks.

Welll it's that time of year again! You never know when the exact time will be when it seems you can do no wrong and the fishing is just through the roof! Salmonflys nymphs and are in the shallows in the upper and lower streches of the river. The adults are showing in and around the town of Maupin. Fishing has been great if you are in the right spots. The inside seam that you caught your steelhead in last year might have some fish in it but the majority of the fish are in tight to shore tucked under trees, in the micro eddies and foam lines that define the deschutes. There is a great chance to get into a Green drake hatch especially on an overcast, drizzely day. If I see one drake I change my fly as this can be a quick event that usually ends up with people shaking their heads in disbelief that there could be that many fish in a 20x20 area! Point being make sure you got some green drake patters in your box.  This is the time of year to stop reading reports get off of that chair and go fishing!

There is a boat in whitehore rapids that is expected to be salvaged on tuesday. This can be a major event with rigging everywhere and you may not be able to pass through.

Deschutes River - Lower - May 17th, 2007

RECORDED:    88 °   FISHING: Excellent
I had the privilege and pleasure to fish the Lower Deschutes River with Johnny Bench, Hall of Fame catcher for the Cincinnati Reds. Johnny was in town for a speaking engagement and Les Stiles (my friend and retired Sheriff) called me and asked if I would like to join them on the water for the day. It didn’t take very long to talk me into a day on the water with Les and one of baseballs greatest players.

We met in the morning for breakfast, a little get to know you time and discuss the plan of action for the day. Les and I soon realized Johnny’s passion for fishing, and the only immediate plan needed was to Get In the Boat and Go!

The river was and had been in great shape for a week, running around 4600+cfs and clear. The sky was clear & sunny and turned out to be the warmest day of the year. There were a ton Caddis flying around and lots of bugs on the water, but I only saw a few risers all day. We did fish some dry Caddis patterns along some current seams and some flat spots & eddies along the bank, but couldn’t tempt a single trout to rise. It was still early in the day, so we switched over to my favorite nymph combo for this time of year. A size #4 Stonefly nymph with an Anato-May dropper in size #16 or #18, which turned out to be the hot set-up for the day. A tan Caddis Pupa or Green rock Worm in size #12 - #16 also works well as the dropper fly this time of year. As soon as we switched to nymphs our hook-up to cast ratio went up dramatically. At one point, we were all standing right next to each other taking turns casting into the same very productive riffle and Les hooked 4 fish in 4 casts. Johnny had a great day hooking at least 15 fish ranging from 12” to 18”. Johnny set-up on one Redside that was pushing 20+” that jumped a couple of times for us, (that’s a Nice fish on the Deschutes) but you know how it usually works…the Big One always gets away.

It was one of my most enjoyable days on the water in a long time. It was not only a great day of fishing, with gorgeous weather, in the beautiful Deschutes River canyon, but also a great day spent with two great people. One who is a friend, customer and a public servant, and the other a baseball idol I grew up watching that shares the passion for the outdoors. Johnny’s at the top of the list of best catchers in baseball history and he’s pretty darn good at catching trout too!

The day was filled with traded stories, laughter and high-fives. I look forward to the next opportunity to fish with the catcher for The Big Red Machine.
