Steelhead & Red Side Trout reports:

Red Side Trout:
Now that water temperatures have risen over 52 degrees, the trout are starting to move around a little more.  Seems like they are more active during the day than the mornings and evenings. The PMD’s are hatching in good enough numbers that the trout are looking up to them from around
2 PM till 4 PM, in the typical slow slick water over weed beds and soft runs below the riffles.

The BWO’s, and Mahogany duns are still hatching, usually just before the PMD’s. Start looking for them around 1 PM  and the fish will respond with good drag free drifts. Don’t forget about the spinner falls on all of these May flies, the trout do key in on them, and you should change your patterns as needed.
Its safe to say that the same is true for the micro caddis hatch, size 20.
They are increasing in their numbers daily, and the fish seem more interested in them because of it.

Stone Fly nymphs are still your best bet at this time. Yes, there are a lot of them on the shore line grass clumps and trees, but they haven’t mated yet  so its going to be a week or so before they start flying over the river to lay their eggs and become more available to the fish. The best time to fish the big nymphs is in the evening hours of the day, after 4 PM is good.

Between 11 AM, and 5 PM, is the best time to fish your other smaller nymphs or emergers. Then try dries depending on the intensity of the hatches.
If the riffles are not producing for you, try the slower water types, (back eddies, slack water on the inside current seams, and soft tail-out’s) to give yourself better odds.

Also, work the micro eddies, and slower water tight to the bank. make sure the water depth is at least 3 feet. Fish with BWO Duns, spent spinners, adult caddis, spent caddis, and suspended midge pupas when the trout are looking up. If not, get the nymphs out and get-em down. Don’t forget about the all important wet fly emergers. this stage gets over looked more often than not.
Try a two fly set-up. Use a heavily weighted first fly to get a second smaller fly deep. Or, fish a high floating dry fly with an emerger trailed behind it using about 15 to 20 inches of tippet.

Have a great day on the river!!!

RECORDED:    56 °   FISHING: Good
Hello everyone.  My name is Jay, and this is my first report as the FNG (Funny New Guy).  I went down to Mecca on Thursday and did some fishing.  The weather cooperated by letting the sun peak out more often that the clouds.  I only saw a few other guys fly fishing, so I pretty much had the river to myself.  I had two rods set up, one with dries and the other with nymphs.  Nymphing was the game during most of the morning.  I was using the WMD with a red copper john as a dropper fished under an indicator.  I was picking up a few fish that way when one of the fish gave up a little secret.  I saw an ant hanging out of its mouth, so I switched to an ant pattern on my dry fly rod.  The wind was blowing steady, and I think the ants were being blown in off the high grass.  The fish were keyed in on the ant, and I pick a few more fish.  After noon I decided to throw streamers for a while.  That’s when I really started to have some fun.  I would toss the streamer in any eddy, riffle or deep hole I came across.  In almost every instance I would have a grab or a fish on.  I caught some of my biggest fish this way.  Needless to say, I had a fun day.

We have streamers in the shop if you would like to try this kind of fishing.  We also have all of the nymphs and ants patterns I was using as well.  Look forward to seeing you in the shop and on the water.

Just spent six of the last 10 days on the river and fishing has been good from around 12:00 to 5:00. The fishing was slow for me most of the mornings but the middle of the day was great! A lot of fish on Redds(smaller gravel in the shallows) Be mindfull of these dark fish and try not to walk on the eggs that they have deposited in the gravel. Still some march browns and blue wing olives around as well as some Mohagany duns, caddis and midges. Slower water and eddies have been producing great visuals!!!! Some salmofly nymphs in the shallows but we are still a couple weeks out as far as drys go.

The Warm Springs area is open and fishing well with nymphs. This time of year is a great time to drift big, Nasty Stone Nymphs along the bottom.

There are some good days of March Brown hatches with some BWO's mixed in.

Caddis pupa patterns are hot, as is the green rock worm and cased caddis. I also like the Bloody Mary and Flashback PT nymphs.

Steelhead & Red Side Trout reports:

Red Side Trout:

The Mahogany Duns have Started hatching and are replacing the March Browns which are fading in numbers as we head into the month of May. Mahogany's are hatching regularly around the 1:30 to 3:30pm time slot. The Trout will take the drys freely for short periods of time, so, make sure you  dries, emergers, and cripples on hand.    The BWO’s dries are still a factor from that traditional time zone of 1 to 3pm. The best over all time to fish now is 11am to 4:30PM, now that the days are getting longer.
Water temperatures are on the rise, triggering the Stone Fly nymphs to start moving toward shore. Use size 8’s and 6’s in black, brown, and gold. Also, try a Matt’s Fur and a pattern called a “20 Incher”, and present them the same way you would your other stone nymph patterns.
The Spring Stones (Skwala) are still active and will be flying around between 1 to 4 PM, if nothing is working up top, you might just get a trout interested.

The fish are starting to respond to nymphs and wets during the morning hours.  There are still just two Caddis hatching now, the micro caddis, about a size 20, and a free living Caddis, a size 14. There seems to be more of them so they are becoming more important to the Trout. Again, its better to fish these flies mid day.Don’t forget about our tiny little friends the Midge. Try those bugs in the afternoon from about 4pm and on, in sizes 18, 20, and 22.

Fishing the above recommended patterns in the film would benefit you the most, in the back eddies, beep runs along the steep banks, and slow water below riffles.  The BWO’s, size 16~18’s, are now coming into their peak winter cycle, which is making dry fly fishing more consistent during the 12 to 3 PM time frame.  Its safe to say that the same is true for the micro caddis hatch, size 20.
They are increasing in their numbers daily, and the fish seem more interested in them because of it. As the days warm up, the Spring Stones (Skwala) have become more active. They usually start fling around between 1 to 4 PM, and the fish are some what interested. That should improve towards the end of the month and into April.
Between 12, and 4 PM, is the best time to fish with dries depending on the intensity of the hatches. You should use nymphs throughout the day if the trout stop looking up. Stick to the slower water types, (back eddies, slack water on the inside current seams, and soft tail-out’s) to find the largest population of trout.

The Deschutes is alive with pretty good hatches of Blue wing olives and March browns. If you catch yourself in a good March Brown hatch take a look around you and try to make mental notes on what the river looks like. This hatch can be pretty isolated and remembering the type of water, depth, distance from riffle, eddie etc... will help you if you find yourself on a different part of the river and want to put yourself in the best spot for the hatch! Late afternoon has had enough caddis (18-20 saddle case) and midges to keep some trout looking up. Soft pockets almost dead water and eddies have been giving up a fish or two when other people are at camp having cocktails! Trout will be spawning now through the next couple months so please respect them and stay away from the super dark fish on small shallow gravel!!!!! Nymphing has good to great with trout not being to picky about flys. Keep an eye on the flows it has been pretty stable as of late but that could change.

Although some good hatches of blue wing olives and a march brown hatch that is getting better every day, the inconsistant high water has been making fishing difficult. The deschutes fishes better when the flows coming out of Madras are under 6000cfs. 55oocfs is still high, with 5,ooo to 4,500 being great flows. Keep  an eye on those flows if you go. tributaries can be a factor as well the big ones are trout creek, warm springs river. and the white river. The latter being below the town of maupin and would not effect an "upper" river trip.

Steelhead & Red Side Trout reports:

Red Side Trout:

Trout fishing is improving, but still spotty.  The cooler weather that we had is finally starting to fade into more Spring like characteristics, and the small window of opportunities are becoming larger, so far as when the trout feed, and on what.

The BWO’s, size 16~18’s, are now coming into their peak winter cycle, which is making dry fly fishing more consistent during the 12 to 3 PM time frame.

Steelhead Report:

The Summer Steelhead in the Deschutes are setting up onto spwaning areas. Some in the main stem, and others up some of the small tributaries.  February and March are the typical months for this wonderful even to take place.
Again, a friendly reminder that if you see them on their REDS, please, just look on and enjoy mother nature at her best. Then, move on, and fish somewhere else. The fish will thank you, and you’ll be rewarded two years later, if you know what I mean.
Have great day!

Trout fishing  has improved in the last couple days! The warm weather has provided us with some pretty good (although  short) surface action. The blue wing olive hatch(size 18-18) is getting more intense and the fish are responding. We have also spotted a couple of skwala stoneflys. This isn't a very prolific hatch on the deschutes but in spots can be important. It's always fun to throw those big dry flys anyway! Your leftover yellow stimulators or norm woods from last years golden stone hatch will work just fine. Keep your eyes peeled on the eddies and barely moving water as there might be a fish eating midges just at or below the surface. It's exciting to think about what the next couple months will bring. March browns, green drakes, golden stones, salmonflys, caddis of July etc........Steelhead are more fun to watch than to catch this time of year. Please leave them alone and let them do their thing. You will thank yourself for doing so in a couple years!!

RECORDED:    50 °   FISHING: Fair
We haven't been on the Lower Deschutes in a few months, but the water level and the weather suggest that the trout fishing is good.  When the sun is able to warm the water, trout will be more active and so will the insects.  This is a fun time of year to fish BWO's in back eddies and along the banks in the slack water.  This is one our favorite times to float from Trout Creek to Maupin.  There is simply no one down there.  Make sure to float through the closed section along the Warm Spring Reservation before fishing.  This stretch is closed this time of year to protect the spawning summer steelhead.  Please, let them do their thing.  We want the river to continue to have great returns of steelhead, like we did this past year.

As the days get longer, look for fishing to get better.  As we grow closer to March, be watching the weather channel.  If it looks like there is going to be sustained days of warm, sunny weather, there are few other places we'd like to be than the Lower Deschutes.
