Deschutes River - Lower - February 24th, 2007

RECORDED:    40 °   FISHING: Fair
Steelhead & Red Side Trout reports:

Red Side Trout:

Trout fishing is still hanging in there even with the cooler weather that has settled in. It should continue to get better as the the BWO’s, and micro caddis hatches increase in numbers as we near the end of February.

Midday, between 12, and 3 PM, is the best time to fish with dries, and nymphs, depending on the intensity of those hatches. On the shoulders of those time frames, nymphs are still the way to go.

There have been some very early Spring stones (Skwala’s) hatching on the days that have been warm, (last week) which got some folks worked up a bit, but the fish ignored them for the most part. They will really start to be more intense next month.
Anyway, for now, stick to the slower water types, (back eddies, frog water on the inside current seams, and soft tail-out’s) to find the largest population of trout.

Work the eddies, and slower water tight to the bank. make sure the water depth is at least 3 feet. Fish with BWO Duns, spent spinners, spent caddis, and suspended midge pupas when the Trout are looking up.
If not, then get the nymphs out and get-em down.
Try a two fly set-up and use a heavy first fly to get the second smaller fly
deep. It works wonders!

Steelhead Report:

The Summer Steelhead in the Deschutes are setting up onto spwaning areas. Some in the main stem, and others up some of the small tributaries.  February and March are the typical months for this wonderful even to take place.
Again, a friendly reminder that if you see them on their REDS, please, just look on and enjoy mother nature at her best. Then, move on, and fish somewhere else. The fish will thank you, and you’ll be rewarded two years later, if you know what I mean.
Have great day!

Steelhead & Red Side Trout reports:

Red Side Trout:
The Trout fishing has picked up a bit, and it should continue to get better as the the BWO hatches start increasing in numbers, as they usually do by this time of February.
Midday is when this takes place, along with some Micro Caddis to keep the Blue Wings company.
This can get Trout to look up for about 30 minutes, and can produce some fun hook-ups with dries. This window of opportunity opens anywhere from 12~3PM, sometimes earlier if the conditions are right, you know, those cloudy, overcast, or even foggy days. Just be ready when it does.
The river levels have switched around since the last report. They’re now about 400 CFS lower than normal, and the condition is very clear.

Work the eddies, and slower water tight to the bank. make sure the water depth is at least 3 feet. Fish with BWO Duns, spent spinners, spent caddis, and suspended midge pupas when the Trout are looking up.
If not, then get the nymphs out and get-em down.

Steelhead Report:
The Summer Steelhead in the Deschutes at this point are still just milling around. Basicly figuring out where they will settle to spawn this February and March. This means they will be less active and less aggressive to your flies. I have seen some make their way up some of the small tributaries along the Deschutes River, its nice to see. A lot of them will spawn in the main stem of the Deschutes, and a friendly reminder that if you see them on their REDS, please, just look on and enjoy mother nature at her best. Then, move on, and fish somewhere else. The fish will thank you, and you’ll be rewarded two years later, if you know what I mean.

Deschutes River - Lower - February 2nd, 2007

RECORDED:    40 °   FISHING: Fair
We haven't been on the Lower Deschutes in a month, but the water level and the weather suggest that the trout fishing is good.  When the sun is able to warm the water, trout will be more active and so will the insects.  This is a fun time of year to fish BWO's in back eddies and along the banks in the slack water.  This is one our favorite times to float from Trout Creek to Maupin.  There is simply no one down there.  Make sure to float through the closed section along the Warm Spring Reservation before fishing.  This stretch is closed this time of year to protect the spawning summer steelhead.  Please, let them do their thing.  We want the river to continue to have great returns of steelhead, like we did this past year.

As the days get longer, look for fishing to get better.  As we grow closer to March, be watching the weather channel.  If it looks like there is going to be sustained days of warm, sunny weather, there are few other places we'd like to be than the Lower Deschutes.

Fishing below the reservation deadline for steelhead is has been fair. Fish being caught are not red hot, but there still are fish to be caught. Slow down everything if you find yourself down there!!!!!!! You should be looking at water that is way different than when you started fishing for these guys in the summer.  Slow almost deadwater is a good bet for this time of year. (IF you don't go crazy with the slow swing) Big ugly, dark flys have been working well and a sink tip line to get you down there to the fish is a must.

Trout fishing is probably better left alone till mid feb.

Steelhead & Red Side Trout reports:
Steelhead:

The Summer Steelhead in the Deschutes at this point are simply milling around. Moving up stream, then down stream, figuring out where they might end up to spawn this February or March. This means they will be less active and less aggressive to your flies. Before the river went up, fishing for them was better than it has been in the past for December. Some folks were picking up 2,3, sometimes 4, Steelhead a day. Mostly wild fish too. What fun! If you do come out to try it, bring a wide variety of sink tips, and flies. This is the time for experimenting. It can surprise you. Water temperature is in the low 40’s and should continue to drop a little more before winter ends. Have fun and take care.
Please don’t hesitate to call if you have any questions.
Our helpful staff will be very pleased to help you.

Thanks, and good fishing to all!

Red Side Trout:

Still dealing with higher than normal river levels on the Deschutes River. Right now we’re looking at a level of 6,370 CFS, which puts the river at around 1,600 CFS higher that normal. There is just a lot of rain, snow, and etc...all around us.The river was brown for a few days, but is now starting to clear up. Hope the freezing level drops, that will really help get it back in shape. The Trout fishing has been tough. Midday you get the occasional BWO, and Micro Caddis hatch that might turn them on for 30 minutes, but for the most part, be happy to fish some nymphs. Below White river, well, you can imagine. Some days better than others as far as clarity. The road crews have done a lot of work on the Hwy. 35 Bridge. They are almost finished, and that will help settle things down. I’m sure by February, it should be more fishable down stream. Anyway, if you come out to Maupin, take I-84 route, much better traveling. Deschutes River - Lower - January 2nd, 2007

RECORDED:    46 °   FISHING: Good
After a very busy couple of weeks in the shop with Christmas shoppers, I finally got a chance to get out on the water. On Christmas day the shop was closed, so I got up just as Santa was leaving and headed for the Lower Deschutes River. The day started with a sunrise that illuminated the blanket of clouds with warm red colors, and ended with a nice 27” Christmas steelhead sporting the same colors. The water was in good condition running around 5000cfs with a little color to it. There was light rain off and on throughout the day, but pretty warm for Dec. 25th.  I had the river to myself so I took my time and worked my way down river fishing all my favorite spots. I picked up my fish in the run across from Dry Creek, fishing a type 8 sink tip and my standard Black/Purple/Blue stinger fly with a red butt. He put up a pretty good fight for a hatchery fish this late in the season, with one jump and a couple of good runs. Normally, he might have ended up in the smoker, but hey, it was Christmas! So I removed the hook from the corner of his mouth and released him. I knew leaving cookies and milk for Santa would bring me good Christmas Fish Karma.
