Stream Flows: In general the river is running a few hundred cfs above normal summer time levels. This is good for both steelhead and trout; it keeps the water fresh and cool. For the most up to date information check stream flows here.

Trout: Trout fishing continues to be good. We are seeing lots of fish up and feeding on surface, especially in the eddies. The main hatch of course is caddis but midges and small mayflies can also play a role. Late evening fishing can be really hot, plan to stay late; that’s often the best part of the day.

Steelhead: We are looking at a good run this year. Early counts over the Columbia dams have been excellent; well up over last year and the ten year average. A good push of fish entered the Deschutes early. Fishing in late July and early Aug was excellent. Then as is typical it slowed a little during the mid Aug heat wave. In the last few days as the weather has cooled it looks like fish are moving again. A second wave of fish is moving in the Columbia and could start to enter the Deschutes any day now. Look for fishing to improve and stay good well into October.

At this point fish are well distributed up to Sherra’s falls. The early fish should start moving above Sherra’s in the end of Aug and the early part of Sept. That second push of fish should be hot on their heels.

Suggested Flies:

Dries: Gray or gray olive mayflies #16 or #18,PMD #14 or #16, Elk Hair Caddis, Tan or Olive, size #16 or #18.

Nymphs: Black, dark brown or even peacock colored stonefly nymphs, weighted, sizes #6 or #8, Flashback Pheasant Tail #16 or #18, Black Midge Pupa #20, Caddis Pupa Tan or Olive #16.

Steelhead: A wide variety of steelhead flies will work so we encourage you to use your imagination. Black and purple are always good colors. Some flash can be helpful. Here are a few traditional patterns that are tried and true. Green Butte Skunk #2 through #8, Street Walker #2 through #8, Freight Train (standard or crystal flash) #2 through #8

The caddis are going nuts

Its as good as it gets down there right now, with hot hot weather and some clouds kicking around about every caddis in the river has been hatching. What this means is that the dry fly fishing has been good to say the least.

They say that there is some thunder shower coming and some cooler weather so who knows what will happen, a lot of the time instead of caddis coming off this can change things to some good mayfly action. But who really knows until you get down there.

There are still good numbers of steelhead showing up every   day and people  have been doing good for them up as far as Maupin, which for August is a real good thing, because August can be a spotty month

Good luck out there

RECORDED:    80 °   FISHING: Fair
The fishing hasn't been bad, but not quite red hot. Warm temperatures and calm mornings before the wind picks up will get the Caddis, Midges, and Mayflies going and trout starting to look up. It seems like you'll get a spot or two before the wind to go hunt sippers on the banks. It is short-lived and seems to die out sooner than later. I would recommend switching over to the nymph rig when you are not seeing working fish in your favorite spots. Fishing "blind" with the dry for opportunistic feeders has been slow.

The dry action has been short mid-morning and then again LATE. Fish are moving into the eddies but it seems more like all or nothing. The eddies that have fish are loaded, but all the other little eddies are ghost towns. Just pull the boat over and look. If there are ducks on the pond get after it. If you don't see any, keep going. But it can change any day. Keep checking the eddies and keep your eyes on the banks for those noses poking up.

Steelhead numbers on the Columbia have dropped back down closer to, and even below the 10 year average. After the big start (well above the ten year average), we'll just have to cross our fingers and see how it shakes out. Steelhead are being caught down low. It seems that the crowds are starting to follow and they even sold out a limit entry weekend.

Typical steelheading: they don't come easy and you'll have to put your time in. I have heard of some great days and also some typical numbers days.  All and all there is some promise for a great year.

FISHING: Good
The Lower Deschutes has been fishing well for trout.  Caddis hatches are providing anglers with plenty of dry fly opportunities, even mid-day.  Pay attention to the foam lines in the backeddies.  The biggest trout often make the least disturbance on the surface while feeding.  Deep nymphing the riffles with caddis pupa imitating flies is also producing fish.

Steelhead fishing is still pretty inconsistent, which is normal for this time of year.  Most hookups are coming in the stretch of river from Macks Canyon to the mouth.

There back

The caddis are coming back and things are starting to look good again and the fishing has been to good to almost great. With the weather warming up there are more and more caddis showing up daily. With the more bugs showing the fish are becoming more willing to come to the surface again. The last three days have been good caddis hatches starting early in the morning and going threw mid to late afternoon.

There and more and more words about the steelhead showing up around Maupin and even a few accidental hookups on nymphs up almost as far a trout creek. The numbers continue to look great.

A good push of fish has entered the Deschutes down close to the mouth. We are currently finding them from Mack’s Canyon down. There are probably a few strays between Mack’s and Sherra’s Falls. These numbers should increase through the month of August.

Deschutes River - Lower - August 1st, 2008

RECORDED:    85 °   FISHING: Fair
Hey Patient Anglers,

Since we have our River Rendezvous coming up on the 8th, 9th and 10th of August, I decided to run down to the Macks Canyon area to get reacquainted with the water and see if we could find a few steelhead that might be up that far. We fished for two days and only touched one fish, and only heard of one other fish caught while we were there and that was on spinning gear. It felt good to be swinging the Deschutes again, but I was surprised that we didn’t see more fish. Steelhead push into the river this time of year in pods and are often separated by gaps between pods of fish. As the number of fish in the river increase, the gaps and pods start to overlap with the end result of fish being spread though out the river. The reports of fish being caught at the mouth of the Deschutes have been very good in the past few weeks and the fish movement over the dams has been better than normal for this time of year. So far, there has been only a trickle of fish through the fish ladder at Sherars Falls which they have to pass to get into the upper river above Maupin. Hopefully by River Rendezvous time, we will see more steelhead making their way up into the Macks Canyon area and provide a few hook-ups for the weekend.

Hope to see you at the River Rendezvous and if you need any more info on the event, give us a call at the shop. (541) 389-6208

Deschutes River - Lower - July 31st, 2008
supplied by: Deschutes River Outfitters
RECORDED:    80 °   FISHING: Good
July started off with huge numbers of Caddis and some fantastic fishing. The numbers of bugs around has tapered off the last little bit and the fishing has been a little more day-to -day. If we get warmer weather and the wind cooperates it will help the fishing tremendously. If it lays down long enough, the fish will move in, set-up, and start chowing down.

The dry fly action has been “okay”. When the weather is cooler and windier (which it has), the number of fish looking up have been fewer and further in between. The 9-11am  (after things have warmed up and before the wind) has been the best time for dries. The evenings have been doing “okay”.  It does seem that it hasn’t been going ‘till really late.  A little fickle to come out and play in that first hint of afternoon shade. If you hit a day that the wind is mellow this will change. But just remember, the best strategy to combat the wind and lack of fish looking up is to nymph.

As it gets later in the season step down a size on your patterns--the bugs are getting smaller. For this time of year eddies should be fishing better than they are. There should be some more fish starting to move into eddies so keep checking in on ‘em. If you like sight fishing for the "sophisticated" trout, you'll like those “eddy fish”. Not always a great way to stack up numbers, but very rewarding when you stick one.

Still seeing Pale Morning Duns (PMDs) but they are also getting a little smaller as well.

Steelhead are on the radar on the lowest sections of the River and it’s time to get ready to get your fix. Counts on the Columbia look really good, WELL above last years’ and the ten-year average. In fact, currently they are almost double last years’ counts. The numbers have taken a slight turn down, but still extremely promising. Fish are currently being caught from Mack’s down to the Mouth and will continue to creep up the River. Keep your fingers crossed for a good year but watch for hot weather that will take the White River and that lower river out.

Tight Lines,

KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE BACK EDDIES

Fishing is still good right now but it has been more of a nymph show of late. A lot of our bug hatches have slowed down except in the evenings.

The places that we have still been consistantly seeing fish up and eating even during the day is in some of the slower water spots and a lot of the back eddies.

There has been more reports of people catching stealhead down below Maupin around Max Canyon. The numbers coming over the dams are still good and strong.  This could be the year we have been waiting for, for some years.

Deschutes River - Lower - July 29th, 2008
supplied by: Fly and Field Outfitters
FISHING: Great
The Lower D continues to fish nicely for trout.  Nymphing the riffles and boulder fields will produce the most mid-day fish, but anglers willing to hunt for their trout in shaded areas are finding decent dry fly fishing when the sun is high.  Caddis patterns are staples for both nymphing and dry fly anglers, but don’t ignore the PMDs, PEDs, little yellow stones, and even craneflies.  Attractor style nymphs (psycho prince, red copper johns, etc.) have also accounted for some nice trout in the net.

Early reports are good for steelhead.  There have been reports of fish being caught as high as South Junction already, but the bulk of the catches being made are much further down river, below Macks Canyon.
