Deschutes River - Lower - July 29th, 2008
supplied by: Fly and Field Outfitters
FISHING: Great
The Lower D continues to fish nicely for trout.  Nymphing the riffles and boulder fields will produce the most mid-day fish, but anglers willing to hunt for their trout in shaded areas are finding decent dry fly fishing when the sun is high.  Caddis patterns are staples for both nymphing and dry fly anglers, but do not ignore the PMDs, PEDs, little yellow stones, and even craneflies.  Attractor style nymphs (psycho prince, red copper johns, etc.) have also accounted for some nice trout in the net.

GET OUT OF BED EARLY

The mornings seem to be the best time to be on the river right now if you want a good chance of catching fish on dry flies. Yesterday there were caddis going from the time we hit the river at 8:30 until about 12:30.  After that they seemed to poop out until just before it got dark.

What the weather later this week there is some cloudy weather coming in and that could make for some good good PMD mayfly hatches to come off.

The numbers of steelhead coming over the dams are still going through the roof.  The year for steelhead could be one to remember.

Good luck

Steelhead:
Sherars to Beavertail: poor to fair chance of a tug.
Beavertail to Macks: fair to good chance of fish.
Macks to the Mouth: good to very good steelheading.

Here at the shop we are all getting excited for what could be a very good year.  Fish are moving, water levels are just above average, and water temperature is right around 60 so it is time to wet a line.

The usual patterns have been doing the trick, so take your favorite flies and swing them with confidence. Take some wakers and skaters too, cause they’ve been aggressive.
Most of the Steelhead being caught are wild, no surprise there, thats usually the case this early in the run. Have fun!!!

Red Side Trout:

Water levels are a hair above average at 4030, which is a good thing. The trout fishing has been good, some slow periods between hatch activity etc... water temperatures are below average, so this should hold up through this month.  July is a bug-rich month, especially with caddis. With is warm summer weather, focus your angling attention to the mornings and evenings.  Midday you can find trout in the oxygen-rich riffles, fast water pockets, and in the deep, steep bank runs.
Check the foam lines for sipping fish feeding on the spent may flies and caddis.
PMD’s morning and midday and PED’s in the evenings have been quite consistent so be prepared with PMD nymphs, and emerger and adult patterns of both.  July is usually a great month for intense caddis action, so be prepared with all stages of net spinning caddis, weedy water sedge, and igloo case builders. Its important to have each stage of these caddis flies in your fly box, to switch patterns quickly, helping you find out what the trout are keyed in on. Larva, Pupa, Adults, and spent patterns in Olive, tan, and ginger, sizes 14 through 18.  A size 16 or 18 tan elk hair caddis, spent partridge caddis, or X caddis is almost never a bad choice if you like to catch ‘em on top.

Current Hatches on the Deschutes River are:
MAY FLIES:
PMD’s, Size 16, PEDs, Size 10 or 12,  BWO’s, Size 18 or 20
CADDIS:  Igloo Case Building, Size 16 or 18, American Grannums, Size 16 or 18, Net Building, Size 18 or 20.
STONE FLIES: Yellow Sally’s Size 16 or 18
CRANE FLIES: Crane Fly’s, Size 16
MIDGE: Midge pupa Size 18 or 20

Check out our “HATCH CHART” for more.

Fly Patterns you should have:
Yellow Sally Stone Nymph, PMD Nymphs, size 16, PMD Emergers, size 16, PMD Adults, size 16, PED Emergers and PED Adults, size 10 or 12,  Cased Caddis, size 10 or 8,  Net Spinning Caddis, size 16 or 18,  Igloo Case Building Caddis, size 18 or 20, Crane Flies, size 16n or 18, and Midge, size 18 to 22.
Make sure that you have some Rusty Spinners, size 16 or 18, emerger patterns like Soft Hackles, Caddis Pupas, and don’t forget those Cripple Patterns.

Other useful fly patterns are, Bead Head CDC Prince Nymph 10 ~ 12, light bright dubbed Soft Hackle (green), bright green sparkle Green Rock Worms, and Silvey’s Prime Pupa’s, Lighting Bugs size 14, Zug Bugs size 14, King Prince Nymph, size 12~16 and a red, green and gold Copper John’s 16 ~ 18s, and a  wire bodied Prince Nymph size 10, in black, red, or green.
Deschutes Water Conditions:
Water temperatures are between 59 and 62 degrees, color is clear.
White River Water Conditions:
Color is glacier grey / light green, not effecting the Deschutes.

Tons of caddis

The caddis are going nuts right now on the lower Deschutes. Today started off real good and then slowed up after awhile. The bulk of the caddis seems to be going earlier opposed to later in the day. By 10:00 the caddis were going nuts and continued to do so until about 2:30.  About 2:30 the caddis started to poop out and then there was a fair but not a great hatch of them in the evening. Lately there has been a fair bit of wind that has been kicking in later in the day which makes the caddis run for cover into the bushes trees and grass.

If your thing is steelhead its getting to be time on the lower part of the river the numbers have been threw the roof. There has been over 10,000 more fish that have went through the Dalles dam then this time last year. From the looks of things right now this should be a great year to chase those crazy steelhead around.

Still keep your eyes peeled there are still plenty of fish spawning on the upper part of the river.

Good luck out there

Still caddis. It's almost tough to write a July fishing report--caddis will be the focus. Not much will change for a while. It will be day-to-day fishing based on conditions such as temperature, wind, and all the other elements that make this sport interesting. The hotter days will produce more "balls of caddis" behind the trees and along the banks. Windy days will blow bugs off the water and casting will obviously be tougher. You also won’t likely see as many working fish--their "dinner plate" is being "swept clean" by the wind.

With all that said, the River HAS been fishing well, all the way from Warm Springs to Maupin. Fish are in all types of water (banks, riffles, behind trees, in micro-eddies, boulder gardens, etc.). Basically they are where they should be. Dry-flies and nymphs are producing, so pick your poison.

As it gets later in the season step down a size on your patterns--the bugs are getting smaller. Also keep checking the eddies; there should be some fish starting to move into them. If you like sight fishing for "sophisticated" trout, you'll like those “eddy fish”.

Still seeing Pale Morning Duns (PMDs) and they are also getting a little smaller as well.

Steelhead are starting to come on the radar down low.  Counts on the Columbia look pretty good. The White River has settled down.  People are prospecting for that "steelhead fix" and rumors/reports of fish hooked are starting to trickle in. Keep your fingers crossed for a good year, and watch for hot weather that will take the White River out.

CADDIS CADDIS CADDIS

The caddis hatch is in full swing now and the last four days on the river was good. Even though the river was a bit busy (but nothing like salmon fly season) there was more than enough fishing willing to eat for us. The fish are about every where you would think they would be, along the bank lines, riffles, and back eddys.

Its time to get down there, with each passing day the crowds seem to get less and less.

Still keep your eyes open there are still fish spawning especially up from warm spring to trout creek. Most of the fish you see in the shallow water around small gravel thats what they are doing.

Good luck out there

July is a great month on the Lower Deschutes!  Fishing has been very steady.  Caddis are dominating the diet of trout.  Savvy anglers are finding rising fish throughout the day, especially in shaded areas.  However, mid-day nymph fishing with caddis pupa imitations in the riffles has also been productive.  PMD and PED hatches are also getting the attention of the fish.  Flows at the Madras gauge this morning are an even 4000 cfs.

Steelhead are in the extreme lower river although there have been catches reported as high up as the Sherars Falls area.  The section from Macks Canyon to the mouth will give anglers their best shot at a hookup.  This time of year, early mornings and late evenings are the best times to swing a fly for steel.

Well, we've entered the July/summer patterns. A lot of caddis along the banks and behind the trees and decent numbers of PMDs popping here-and-there. The hotter days will really get those caddis swarming.

Don't forget the Pale Evening Duns (PEDs) that can get the afternoon/evening shade session rolling. Step up the size on PMD patterns and you should have it covered. Yellow Sallies and Crane Flies are also present. A Yellow Sally pattern could be just the change-up from a Caddis or PMD to finally get that tough "bank sipper" to climb on. They also work well for running a dry-and-drop since most of the smaller Caddis and PMD patterns will get pulled under by all but the lightest nymphs.

In the foreseeable future, Caddis will be king. Your boxes should be full of a variety in all stages (adult dries, larvae, and pupae). Elk Hair Caddis, X-Caddis, and Sparkle Pupae are the meat-and-potato patterns (but there are a ton of other productive patterns to try as well). Everybody and every shop has their "local" favorites so don't be afraid to ask questions.

PMDs will be the unsung heroes this month. Look for these to come off around 2:00ish. If we get any thunderstorms or freak cooler rainy days they can come of earlier and in greater numbers. Some of the best and most consistent trout fishing of the year is still ahead of us.

As far as the fishing goes, if you look around on the banks and behind the trees in the shade you can find subtle risers. Pay attention—it’s hunting! Stalking bank sippers is rewarding. And if you happen to spot these fish you can throw dry flies most days.

There was a fire around the Mecca area the last day or two. All reports are that it is out (was on a multi-day when this all was happening). Areas above Mecca are a little charred. Sounds like the campground survived and is "okay".

July is a fantastic month--the Deschutes has much more to offer than just Salmon Flies.

Hey they come

The caddis are all but in full swing right now.  They has been good hatches almost all day long and the fishing have been plenty willing to come up and eat on the surface. If the weather stays like this there should be good consistant hatches for quite some time.

The river has been slowly dropping in the last few days and now it's just about a perfect level.  If your going down below trout creek watch out there are more and more rocks showing up in White Horse Rapids. I just passed the boat salvager on my way home tonight and it looked like he was heading that way.

Good luck out there and be safe.
