Deschutes River - Lower - June 24th, 2008
supplied by: Deschutes Canyon Fly Shop, Inc.
RECORDED:    75 °   FISHING: Good
Red Side Trout:

The Deschutes River is now flowing at a slightly above normal level of 4,460 and has been flowing at that level for the last few days so the fish are well adjusted to the current levels. The fishing has been fair to great, some slow periods between hatch activity etc... but for the most part, good. of course June is a wonderful month due to all the hatches that take place. If you want to throw the adult stone, time is running out, however, trout will still key on the Goldens occasionally so it is worth a shot.  PMD’s midday and PED’s in the afternoons have been quite consistent so be prepared with PMD nymphs, and emerger and adult patterns of both.  Also, caddis action can be fairly consistent so be prepared with all stages of free living caddis, especially Pupa patterns in Olive sizes 14 and 16.

Current Hatches on the Deschutes River are:
Golden Stones, Mahogany Duns, BWOs, PMD’s, Pale Evening Duns, a few Green Drakes, Free living Caddis, Igloo Case Building Caddis, American Grannum Caddis, and midge. Check out our “HATCH CHART” for more.

Fly Patterns you should have:
Stone Fly Nymph’s, (Black, Brown and Gold) Stone Fly Adults, Norm Wood Special,  Matt’s Fur Nymphs, Cased Caddis, Free Living Caddis, Igloo Case Building Caddis, and Midge. Make sure that you have some emerger patterns with you like Soft Hackles, Caddis Pupas, and don’t forget those Cripple Patterns.

Other useful fly patterns are, Possy Buggers, light bright dubbed Soft Hackle (green), bright green sparkle Green Rock Worms, and Silvey’s Prime Pupa’s. Cast a Leech or Bugger Pattern in a size range of 10~14’s. In addition,  Lighting Bugs size 14, Zug Bugs size 14, and Cased Caddis size 10~12, Prince Nymphs, size 8~14, King Prince Nymph, size 12~16 and a red copper wire bodied prince nymph size 10.

Water temperatures are between 51 and 54 degrees. The color is what it should be now, nice and green. Trout have moved into some of the quicker paced seams along the edges of riffles, and in the tails of riffles, where the water deepens and the current slightly slows. Make sure you cover the back eddies and the foam lines in the slow deep runs against those steep banks.

Deschutes River - Lower - June 24th, 2008

RECORDED:    81 °   FISHING: Great
Fishing has been GREAT all the way throughout the system for the last week or so all the way from Warm Springs to Maupin area. The Maupin area is definitely slowing down in terms of fish looking up for the big bugs but there are plenty of Caddis and PMD’s around. Should be just a couple of days until all of that stabilizes and July Caddis fishing goes into full-effect. Look for areas of slow fishing to potentially start from the White Horse/South Junction area to Maupin. Hopefully with the Salmon Fly and Golden Stone hatch fishing so well, so late into the season, and with the number of Caddis and PMDs present, the fish will quickly switch over.

Again, you might have a couple more days (weeks?) to throw the big bugs from Warm Springs to South Junction. Time will tell but start saying goodbye to the big bugs. However, all is not lost. Some of the best fishing (in my opinion) is yet to come. July to me equals great dry-fly fishing (sometimes all day), more thinned-out crowds than June and GREAT weather. Good times all around. Also in July the fishing is normally much more stable and consistent. And in fishing stability and consistency are a good thing.

Please remember to leave any spawning fish alone that you happen see. Fishing tailouts, around islands, on smaller gravel, and in skinny water, is a sign you might be fishing spawners. Keep an eye out for dark and paired-up fish, in large concentrated numbers. If you see any of these, it means you are fishing a redd. Please protect our future.

The salmonflies are on the downward spiral

The days of the salmonflies are limited, They are still eating them real good as far down as Dant if you know where that is. Dant is about 12 miles up from the town of Maupin. Of late the bigger and the uglier the fly the better it has been working for us, especially down on the overnight trip where there are fewer bugs.

The beauty of being down there right now is that the crowds have started to disapear so you get more of the pick of the yummy spots.

You better get them while you can its only a matter of days until they are gone.

Deschutes River - Lower - June 18th, 2008

RECORDED:    80 °   FISHING: Great
Well June weather arrived and it has been a blast on the River. With all the nice weather, the bugs have been flying and the trout have been looking up from Trout Creek to Harpham. The traffic was light and the fishing fantastic. Still plenty of big bugs around. Heavier concentrations are in the Warm Springs to South Junction area.  Still Salmon Flies and Goldens are present below, but starting to thin out. I am noticing more PMD's and Caddis. The lower I go the more the fish are keyed in on them.  They've still been taking a well placed Golden pattern, which is nice. It seems like they (Salmon Flies and Stones) are just now really flying and laying eggs.  I think it will continuie to fish well until they really thin out. We normally get a bonus round when the bugs are all but gone but the trout remember what they are. As it gets even later in the month the trout will shift to the caddis and PMD's. Fish accordingly. Get out there and fish! It is just now getting really good, and besides the weather is finally pleasant.

Prime Time

The river is in perfect shape and the are tons of bugs kicking around. Right now is as good as any time to get on the deschutes, especially from warm springs to trout creek. Down by Maupin the salmon flies are all but gone, but are still eating a them pretty good. Down by maupin you will also probably see a quite a bit fewer people now that things are winding down down there.

It looks like there will be some more clouds showing up later this week so keep your eyes peeled for some good mayfly hatches especially the big fun one green drakes.

If you love the salmon fly hatch you had better get out there while you can because things will start to end fast and you will have to wait another whole year to cast the big bugs again.

Good luck and knock'em dead

Now is the time on the Lower Deschutes!  Water levels have dropped over 1000 cfs in the last week.  As of this writing, flows at the Madras gauge are at 4250 cfs.  Drastically warming air temperatures combined with lower flows are producing some very good dry fly fishing with adult stonefly patterns.  Although the hatch is fading lower in the river near Maupin, it is just starting to peak in the upper section of the river near Warm Springs.  Both salmonfly and golden stone adults are present.  Sometimes fish will prefer goldens to salmonflies, especially later in the hatch, so be prepared with both.  Green drakes are another June hatch to be ready for.  Although the drakes rarely hatch in large numbers, big fish often pay attention when they are on the water.  PMD and caddis hatches have also been picking up as we get into summer mode on the Deschutes.

MANY FISH ARE STILL SPAWNING... please tred lightly.

You will see some good PMD hatches in the afternoon and caddis at night.

If you venture between Trout Creek and Maupin, keep an eye out for Green Drakes.

Hopefully we will see steelhead showing up at the mouth by early July.

Its Time To Go

The salmon flies are almost gone down by Maupin so if you like fishing that area you had better get down there now. Things are still going very strong from Warm Springs to Trout Creek.

The weather and the river are going to be in just about as perfect as shape as you can ask for, for this year.  Warm weather and lower water levels.

Go get some salmon fly fishing before its to late.

Good Luck

Stream Flows: Flows have started to settle down a little bit but there is still a lot of snow in the mountains – warmer weather could bring the rivers back up again. For the most up to date information check stream flows here. Consider anything below 4800 cfs to be lower more summer like flows. Above that look for river to be getting bigger and more likely to be off color.

Trout: Salmonfly hatch stated late this year; cool wet weather and high flows held things back, we are hoping it will run late too and we will regain some fishing on the back end. We think the hatch will continue in good shape at least through June 20th in the Warm Springs to Trout Creek area and perhaps a little longer.

In addition to the Salmonfly look for hatches of Green Drakes and large number of PMDs.

As the Salmonfly hatch dies off look for it to be replaced almost seamlessly with the start of the caddis hatch.

Suggested Trout Flies:

Dries: Gray or gray olive mayflies #14 through #18,PMD #14 or #16, Green Drake #10 2XL, Elk Hair Caddis, Tan or Olive, size #16 or #18, Salmonflies or Golden Stones #6 or 8 3XL.

Nymphs: Black, dark brown or even peacock colored stonefly nymphs, weighted, sizes #6 or #8, Flashback Pheasant Tail #16 or #18, Black Midge Pupa #20, Caddis Pupa Tan or Olive #16
