The fish have put their feed bags on in preparation for the winter. During warm spells they are taking dry flies, when the weather is less than ideal, they are crushing streamers and gorging on the nymphs. The days until the ponds freeze are limited, but if you can get out there before, it will be worth it.

With the extremely hot summer we have had so far, we scaled back our LC trips the last couple months. The ponds warmed up to the point it is very easy to kill a fish that is played to your net. In an effort to maintain this awesome fishery we felt it best to give the fish a break, and hit them hard when the ponds cooled down. Well that time has come, the weather is definately cooling down, and the fish should be healthy and ready for battle.
We are again ready to book trips on the LC Ranch. Remember September, October and November and without a doubt the best months to fish the Ranch. The fish are keyed in on large terestrial patterns, and a dry dropper rig can keep you hooked up for the better part of the day. As these are the best months to fish the Ranch, the days book up fast. FISHING: Great

Nymph rigs on the Dog and Honeymoon have been very effective and have taken some very nice fish. A chronomid pattern fished below a stike indicator, can catch a lot of fish. The damsel flies are very active and the fish are certainly keying on them. We have been taking fish by "strymphing", slow stripping a nymph rig along and off the weed beds. Hold on tight, because these fish mean business when they hit, but don't ignore the subtle takes. Who knows you make hook into one of those 30" plus fish. A dry/dropper rig is also catching some fish on the smaller ponds. This technique will slowly become the standard as the summer terrestrials become more important to the fish. As things begin to warm up, we should be able to start throwing large dry fly patterns with droppers at the fish, and keep the nets wet. It is gearing up to be a tremendous year on the LC Ranch. The Ranch is off to another great year. The fish seem to have grown up a little over the winter, and are larger on average than they were last year. We have changed tactics up a little. Nymph rigs on the Dog and Honeymoon have been very effective and have taken some very nice fish. A chronomid pattern fished below a stike indicator, will catch a lot of fish. e have also been taking fish by "strymphing", slow stripping a nymph rig along the bottom. Hold on tight, because these fish mean business when they hit. And who knows you make hook into one of those 30" plus fish. A dry/dropper rig is also catching some fish on the smaller ponds. This technique will slowly become the standard as the spring hatches and summer terrestrials become more important to the fish. As things begin to warm up, we should be able to start throwing large dry fly patterns with droppers at the fish, and keep the nets wet. As the fish become more aggressive in the coming weeks, streamers will also be an effective technique. There has been a great callibaetis hatch in the evenings. Size 14-16 spinners are an effective way to catch fish when they turn onto this prolific hatch. It is gearing up to be a tremendous year on the LC Ranch. Book early to ensure the dates of your trip! Ice is off everywhere. Fish are active and the fishing is excellent. Anything red was the ticket...heave and leave. The longer the fly sits and the more red the fly, the better. Because of the wind intensity at times and direction we drifted the east bank of honeymoon with good success with both the northwest and the southwest corners producing well. We also anchored off of the point on the west side and had success. We took several fish on the strymphing technique with the blood worm. I would have them do that sometimes before they recast. It was a matter of having the patience to leave your rig there. It seemed at times they were cruising in packs but other times seemed more random. Book early to ensure the dates of your trip! Another fantastic year at the LC Ranch. The fish were healthy, strong and willing to eat. The hot ponds this past year were Honeymoon, Dog, Upper Fisher Creek and Upper Lodge. Honorable mentions must be given to Logde Pond and Fisher Creek. The ponds have iced up for the winter and generally the ice comes off in late-March. Once the ice thaws we expect the great fishing to pick up right where it left off. Book early to ensure the dates of your trip! What a great time to be at the L.C. Ranch! The browns are actively looking for a quick easy meal before they try to spawn. More importantly, the big rainbows have put on their feedbags preparing for the winter. The L.C. Ranch is still fishing well and should continue this way until the ponds freeze (generally late November). Big fish are actively cruising the shallows for an easy meal. They are rising to dry flies (mostly terrestrials) and they are eating suspended nymphs / emergers (AP Emergers, BH Copper Johns, etc). Yes, you read that right...we still have some great dry fly activity! Report provided by: Dustin Carlson Fishwest Outfitters & Guide Service www.fishwestoutfitters.com 877.77.FLIES
