Missouri River - May 7th, 2007
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:    70 °   FISHING: Excellent
Warmer weather and more stable river conditions have the Missouri perking again. Caddis, BWO's, March Browns and midges are all part of the action. While it's not Mother's Day yet, the bugs don't care. The fish are chowing on adults. When it's bright, nymphs are steady producers. All sections of the river produce. The fish is on.

RECORDED:    70 °   FISHING: Great
Darkness rules. If it's cloudy, the fish are on top.  Midges are still a force and are consistent producers (because they happen early and late).  Baetis taste better on all sections of the river (unless it's sunny).  As usual, the weather dictates the story.  When the beach looks ugly, the river looks golden.  And, the freestones are mostly blown.  It's pretty warm out there.  Thunderstorms are starting to brew.

Missouri River - April 13th, 2007
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:    53 °   FISHING: Good
Typical Montana weather that changes all the time gives locals a decided advantage.  When it warms up, the wind blows.  When it's cool and cloudy, you can feel the low pressure.  Locals don't have to fish in the wind. A few of them are catching fish on midge dries. We'll slip into a full spring weather pattern soon and things on the river will heat up accordingly.

Midges continue to dominate the action.  A few baetis have been spotted.  It's still a little cool for them too.  As the river warms, expect to see the baetis hatch intensify.   The river will be running fairly low throughout spring.  The dry fly action should be pretty good. Small olive & brown buggers produce.  Crabs don't swim, they crawl.  So, strip slowly.

Our rainbows are in fully in the spawning mode.  Most of the spawners run up the tributaries (where you can't fish).  Regardless, there are lots of healthy browns to keep you happy.  The river is in pretty good shape.  Can you taste spring?

Things are definitely looking up. The wind the last couple of days hasn't been bad. The weatherman predicted differently. Give him a chance. He might be right tomorrow. Or, maybe not. If it's cloudy and calm.........If it's not, try the depths. Chucking and ducking will keep you occupied with decent results. Nymphing in slower water also produces.

The river took a 100 cfs drop today and the water temp came up 1°. It seems to have made a difference. Montana showed its charm today. Sunny, mid 60's, and calm. Tomorrow is another day.

Missouri River - February 28th, 2007
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:    45 °   FISHING: Fair
Cloudy and gloomy will likely be replaced with sunny and mild throughout the week. High temperatures in the upper 40's may keep you out there long enough to see a few fish up on midges this weekend. Some of those fish are white fish, but some of them behave suspiciously like trout - wild trout. Who knows, you might get enough clouds to provide some serious entertainment.

The recent wet cycle we have been under has brought steady snow to the area. Don't put your skis away quite yet. It's still winter. Pulling your fly rod out of storage could yield some surprising results. Skiing will provide all day entertainment. If you only have a few hours to kill, check out the river. It's waiting for you.

FISHING: Fair
Well, we would recommend this as a place to fish in the winter, but right now it is nasty. The boys up at the Trout Shop in Craig said that it's been windy, windy, and windy. With sustained winds of 35+ mph and gusts up to 60, you might want to hold off for a bit. When the weather aligns with your plans, you can head on up and use some of the usual suspects like sow bugs, pink soft hackles, midges, scuds, and a few small mayfly nymphs for good measure.

FISHING: Poor
Haven't had a solid report from the Wolf Creek/Craig area as of late. Most reports have been of wind and nasty temperatures, so I personally would wait and check back and as soon as I hear something good I will post it right away. Fishing will be pretty much the same as it is all winter long, sow bugs, scuds, small midge larvae and some eggs the only section that is really worth a hoot in the winter is from the dam down to Craig, and I even like to shorten it up and go afterbay to Wolf Creek...

RECORDED:    46 °   FISHING: Good
It's not bad out there. High temperatures may reach into the lower 50's this weekend. Winter? Don't worry. It will be back. For now, enjoy the solitude the river is certain to deliver. It's pretty quiet out there. You might find a few weekend warriors out there, but that's about it.

Midges, buggers, small nymphs, scuds, and the W.O.R.M.

Missouri River - November 10th, 2006

RECORDED:    45 °   FISHING: Great
Cooler temperatures in the tolerable range will be around for several days. The air temperature will be about the same as the river temperature - 46°. You should probably get out there. W.I.N.D. seems to be over with. Winter is being announced with the cool and light breeze surrounding the river. Soon, if not already, you'll be dreaming of the tropics. 1/0 Merkin?

BWO's, Midges, Small Nymphs, and Buggers. Pick your pleasure. Sleep in and enjoy a cup of coffee. It takes a little time to get things brewing on the river.

At 48°, the Missouri continues to produce in a big way. Captive Duns and Midges are bringing big noses to the surface. Mostly Cloudy weather will bring on Mostly Dry Fly in comfortable fall conditions. The tourists are gone.
