Missouri River - September 13th, 2006
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:
65 °
FISHING: Great
A MAJOR CHANGE IN THE WEATHER PATTERN IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON THURSDAY...WITH THE PASSAGE OF A CANADIAN COLD FRONT. COLDER AIR WILL START TO MOVE SOUTH INTO MONTANA THURSDAY...WITH EVEN COLDER AIR EXPECTED TO MOVE INTO THE REGION FRIDAY NIGHT AND SATURDAY. A MIX OF RAIN AND SNOW CAN BE EXPECTED IN THE MOUNTAINS AS EARLY AS THURSDAY...WITH SNOWFALL BECOMING WIDESPREAD IN THE MOUNTAINS FOR THE PERIOD OF THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY. ALSO BY FRIDAY NIGHT...TEMPERATURES WILL BECOME COLD ENOUGH FOR RAIN TO CHANGE OVER TO SNOW ACROSS A WIDE PORTION OF THE PLAINS OF NORTH CENTRAL MONTANA. HOWEVER...DAYTIME TEMPERATURES WILL WARM ENOUGH FOR ANY SNOW TO CHANGE BACK TO RAIN ON SATURDAY. FOR ELEVATIONS ABOVE 5000 FEET IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN FRONT AND IN THE MOUNTAINS BETWEEN GREAT FALLS AND LEWISTOWN...THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS FROM FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT. OVER SOUTHWEST MONTANA...A MIX OF RAIN AND SNOW IS LIKELY IN THE VALLEYS...WITH ACCUMULATING SNOWS GENERALLY ABOVE 5500 FEET. HUNTERS...RANCHERS...FIRE WEATHER INTERESTS...AND ANY PERSONS WHO HAVE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES...OR PLAN TO TRAVEL THROUGH NORTH CENTRAL OR SOUTHWEST MONTANA FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY...SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR WINTER LIKE CONDITIONS IN THE MOUNTAINS AND MUCH COOLER AND WETTER CONDITIONS AT LOWER ELEVATIONS.
Smells like Baetis Soup.

Missouri River - September 10th, 2006
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:
82 °
FISHING: Great
Same old same old until next Wednesday - highs in the 80's. There's one very important difference.....fishing is pretty good. Guides are busy. Highs in the low-to-mid 80's will be replaced with a chance of snow in the upper elevations by Thursday. High temperatures won't get out of the 50's to low 60's from Thursday on. Mostly cloudy skies will brighten your day and bring our trout to the surface. It could be Baetis Soup time. Is your heart pumping? If you're not getting them on top, the depths produce steady results.
Tricos continue to be the dominant bug. That could end soon. Caddis have made a reappearance midday especially in the canyon section of the river. Pseudos are more prevalent. BWO's have already been spotted. While the weather is warm, bank on terrestrials in the afternoon. Buggers and nymphs are effective most of the time. Things are good and could be phenomenal later this week. It's Montana. Be ready for anything.

FISHING: Good
If you're looking to get out of the smoke, you will find somewhat of a reprieve on the Mo. It gets a little hazy, but not too bad. We could see a little rain on Friday. Hopefully Big Timber gets a bunch. Fishing reports are solid. From time to time, weeds are a nuisance. It depends upon the water managers who can't seem to make up their minds as to what flows should be. Stable flows have kept the weeds at bay for the last few days.
Tricos continue to be the dominant bug. Caddis have made a reappearance midday and evenings. Pseudos are becoming more prevalent. BWO's have been spotted. Perhaps the next cold snap will bring out the real deal. Calibaetis are surprisingly strong. While the weather is warm, bank on terrestrials in the afternoon. FISHING: Good
Partly cloudy, calm, and moderate temperatures will greet you on the river for the next several days. Rain is only slightly possible. Sounds buggy. Smoke is not an issue.
Fishing reports are solid. Micro pods of rising fish are found through much of the day. If you're not getting them on top, the depths produce some interesting results.

Missouri River - September 4th, 2006
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:
80 °
FISHING: Good
Cool to down right cold nights have perked up the river to a decent level. Low temperatures in the 20's to 30's warned of winter, but promised noses in the near future. We had to scrape our windows for the first time Friday morning. Steam from the river created a wall of fog in Craig. Water temp: 63°. We've had seanable weather over the last few days. Heat really isn't an issue.
Fishing reports are solid. Dry flies produce at times as do nymphs. Weeds have been for the most part flushed through the system. Enjoy Labor Day weekend. Now that your kids are in school, you can focus your energy on the river.
Tricos are molting in The Trout Shop Cafe at 9:30 AM and getting ready to produce next year's batch. Pseudos are picking up steam again. Hoppers, ants, beatles and terrestrials in general are producing. Caddis are making a midday surprise visit. There's enough of them to get fish up in the afternoon. If they aren't working the surface, you will get them on nymphs and buggers.

Missouri River - February 9th, 2006
supplied by: Montana Fishing Outfitters
RECORDED:
40 °
FISHING: Fair
We are certainly still in the winter mode of fishing on Mo. We were out yesterday and the water temp is a frigid 35 degrees. Flows are hovering around 4700 and the clarity is solid, as it usually is on the Mo.
Fish anything pink in sizes 10 to 20. Pink scuds, pink lightning bugs, and the fly you love to hate, the San Juan Wormie.
We also caught fish stripping sculpin patterns, very slowly. Use an intermediate of fast-sinking line or sink-tip.
Good luck! Contact us for more info or if you are considering a guided trip.

Missouri River - November 25th, 2005
supplied by: Yellowstone Angler
FISHING: Good
Reports from the Missouri indicate that there has been some good steamer fishing on cloudy days. A variety of wooly buggers fished on a floating line or a Teeny mini-tip will do the trick. Blue Winged Olives are coming off now, and cloudy days can produce some especially good dry fly fishing with small size 18 and 20 Baetis patterns. The increased flows has also provided some good nymphing with sow bugs and scuds.
