Missouri River - August 25th, 2005
supplied by: The Kingfisher
FISHING: Good
River Levels [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here] Look for some action with remnant PMDs, and pseudos as well as hoppers and ants and tricos in the morning. The sunny but cooler weather should help the trico prospects. The small caddis that're coming off each morning have been getting lots of attention from the fatties feeding in the shallows. Don't overlook these when fishing your tricos. Hopper/dropper rigs have been effective as well if you stay out of the main currents carrying the majority of drifting algae. HATCHES: tricos, psuedos, caddis, terrestrials. FLIES: Tricos, hopper patterns, Pt's, lightning bugs. flashbacks, small parachute adams, paleminos, griffith's gnats, etc... WEATHER: Today: Mostly sunny. Highs 65 to 75. ..60 to 65 in the mountains. West winds 5 to 15 mph. Tonight: Mostly clear. Lows 40 to 45. West winds 5 to 10 mph. Friday: Mostly sunny. Highs 75 to 85. ..70 to 75 in the mountains. West winds 5 to 15 mph. Friday night: Mostly clear. Lows 45 to 50. West winds 5 to 15 mph. Saturday: Mostly sunny. Highs 75 to 85. West winds 5 to 15 mph. Saturday night and Sunday: Mostly clear. Lows 45 to 50. Highs 75 to 85. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: There is going to be a substantial release from Holter Dam beginning Sept. 15. They are drawing down the lake approximately 1' in order to do some repairs on cement retaining walls. Got your crawdad patterns tied? Got your slime line ready!

FISHING: Good
Stream Flow Information [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
The Mighty Mo continues to be a day to day fishery. The dry fly fishing will be dependant on the severity of the trico hatch. It has been very strong one day and almost non existent the next. Psuedo cleons have been hatching as well during the mid morning hours and they can bring the fish up to the surface as well. Hopper fishing has been good during sunny days. If the clouds move in try a streamer fished against the rip rap banks below Craig. PP&L power company has scheduled some maintance on the reservoirs above which was going to see an increase and than a decrease in flows on the river starting September 1st. This work has been changed and they are going to be using water from Canyon ferry instead of Holter and Hauser to accomplish the work. This is good news because flows should stay pretty stable below Holter. They were scheduled to be raised considerably and than dropped substantially if they were going to draw down the water from Hauser and Holter. We should see pretty stable flows since they are going to do the work using Canyon Ferry instead. Fly Pattern Suggestions: Parachute Hopper #8-12, Molly Hopper # 10-14, Parachute Flying Ant # 14-16, Cinnamon Ant # 14-16, Hackle Stacker PMD # 14-18, Quill Body PMD # 14-18, PMD Paracripple # 14-18, Parachute Hares Ear # 14-18, CDC PMD Emerger # 14-18, Killer May # 14-18, Split Case PMD # 14-18, Spent Partridge Caddis # 14-16, Elk Hair Caddis # 14-16, Parachute Caddis # 14-16, Goddard Caddis # 14-16, Mangy Caddis # 14-16, Electric Caddis # 14-16, Triple Wing Trico # 18-20, Double wing spinner # 20-22, CDC Trico # 18-20, CDC Hackle Stacker Trico # 18-20.

Missouri River - August 8th, 2005
supplied by: The Kingfisher
FISHING: Great
River Levels [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here] With all the rivers in the Missoula area seeing high afternoon water temps and less than stellar fishing, the Mo is looking particularly good these days. The nymphing has been good lately with the standard Missouri fare continuing to be productive. Crowds have been very hit and miss with some days very busy and then the next day, for no particular reason, virtually deserted. Pink and grey scuds in 12 to 16, lighting bugs in 14 to 18, red san juan worms in 10s or 8s, olive p-tails and beerheads in 16s and 18s. For the dries have small royal wulffs, size 10 hoppers and yellow to rusty size 14 to 18 comparaduns have all been working well. Look for the evening caddis to light things up for you, especially with dragging emergers. HATCHES: tricos, psuedos, caddis, terrestrials. FLIES: brown, yellow or white buggers, size 8 to 10 hopper patterns, Pt's, lightning bugs. flashbacks, small parachute adams, paleminos, griffith's gnats, etc... WEATHER: Today: Areas of smoke through the day. Isolated showers and thunderstorms through the day. Mostly cloudy early in the morning then becoming partly cloudy. Some thunderstorms may produce gusty winds. Highs in the upper 80s to mid 90s. West winds 10 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Tonight: Slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in the evening. Areas of smoke through the night. Partly cloudy. Lows in the upper 40s to mid 50s. West winds 10 to 20 mph in the evening. Tuesday: Areas of smoke in the morning. Slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Partly cloudy. Highs in the mid 80s to lower 90s. West winds around 15 mph in the afternoon. Tuesday night: Partly cloudy in the evening then clearing. Lows in the mid 40s to lower 50s. Wednesday: Slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny. Highs in the mid 80s to lower 90s. West winds around 15 mph in the afternoon.

Missouri River - July 27th, 2005

FISHING: Great
Stream Flow Information [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
Fishing Report: Flows have been very stable on the Missouri and the fishing has been good. Early morning and late evening will provide the best options for fishing dry flies. Trico's and PMD's are hatching in the morning hours. Both of these hatches will see different magnitudes of bugs from day to day so if you are there for a few days you may see a day of real strong hatch activity followed by a day of slow hatch activity. In the evenings you will see some good caddis activity unless the wind picks up and blows the bugs away. The best caddis action will be just prior to last light. During the middle of the day you can have some success fishing small hoppers and flying ant patterns. Trailing a bead head dropper off the back can also provide some good results. As a last resort, put on a strike indicator with a scud and sow bug dropper and dredge the fish out of the depths. Nymphing is usually a productive method on the Mo but since we are in the heat of the summer dry fly action I always try dries first. We have plenty of time to look at indicators during the spring, fall and winter. Fly Pattern Suggestions: Parachute Hopper #8-12, Molly Hopper # 10-14, Parachute Flying Ant # 14-16, Cinnamon Ant # 14-16, Hackle Stacker PMD # 14-18, Quill Body PMD # 14-18, PMD Paracripple # 14-18, Parachute Hares Ear # 14-18, CDC PMD Emerger # 14-18, Killer May # 14-18, Split Case PMD # 14-18, Spent Partridge Caddis # 14-16, Elk Hair Caddis # 14-16, Parachute Caddis # 14-16, Goddard Caddis # 14-16, Mangy Caddis # 14-16, Electric Caddis # 14-16, Triple Wing Trico # 18-20, Double wing spinner # 20-22, CDC Trico # 18-20, CDC Hackle Stacker Trico # 18-20.

Missouri River - July 15th, 2005

FISHING: Good
Stream Flow Information [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
Fishing Report: The dam managers have been decreasing the flows about 500 C.F.S. a day until they get to their target flow of 4100 C.F.S. The hatch activity has been very solid with trico's, pmd's and caddis. The caddis and pmd's have been strong for several weeks now and the tricos are just starting to hatch in very good numbers. With the hot weather this week fishing has been very good early in the am and late in the evening. There has been a bit of a slow period through the heat of the day. Nymphing will get you into some fish if you must fish the entire day. The hatches have been stronger downstream of Craig but the hatches nearer the dam have been gaining ground on the upper reaches. Hopefully the dam managers will keep the flows at around 4100 for a while, the higher flows will make a difference in the fishing later this summer.
Fly Pattern Suggestions: Hackle Stacker PMD # 14-18, Quill Body PMD # 14-18, PMD Paracripple # 14-18, Parachute Hares Ear # 14-18, CDC PMD Emerger # 14-18, Killer May # 14-18, Split Case PMD # 14-18, Spent Partridge Caddis # 14-16, Elk Hair Caddis # 14-16, Parachute Caddis # 14-16, Goddard Caddis # 14-16, Mangy Caddis # 14-16, Electric Caddis # 14-16, Triple Wing Trico # 18-20, Double wing spinner # 20-22, CDC Trico # 18-20, CDC Hackle Stacker Trico # 18-20.

REPORTS: The second day of cloudy weather should get the bugs kicking over here a bit more. The best rig will remain a hopper/dropper but tandem nymph rigs in the riffles have been the numbers producers lately. The evening caddis hatch is still very intense and has become the point in the day where you'll make your hay.

REPORTS: Hey look, another slight change in the flow on the Missouri. The fishing has been good when you can find the podded up fish. Because of the much higher flows than most people are used to, the fish will not be where you are used to finding them. The evenings have been productive with PMD’s and caddis, it’s just a matter of locating and taking it to the pods. Standard Missouri fare in terms of the small nymphs continue to work well. RS2s, lighting bugs, flashback p-tails, red san juan worms, pink scuds, etc...

Missouri River - June 30th, 2005

FISHING: Fair
River Levels [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
REPORTS: Your fishing is liable to be much better in the afternoon than this morning on the Mo. Bright sun for the fisrt time in a while will likely keep the fish down until the clouds and rain move in this afternoon. While there will be some wind accompanying the front, it doesn't sound like it should be too bad. You'll really want to see the clouds by then anyway! Standard Missouri fare in terms of the small nymphs and then dark bugger patterns continue to produce well. Hopper/dropper rigs are still a happy thing. When you come to a pod of risers, a simple #14 cripple or parachute adams will suffice. The evening caddis has been lots of fun with a stalcup emerger. Flows have remained fairly stable in the mid to upper 6,000 for some time now and the stability has helped get the fishing back on track after the big push of water on the 17th.

Missouri River - June 23rd, 2005

FISHING: Good
River Levels [click here] Missouri River Montana FWP Guide [click here]
REPORTS: Below Holter, flows are down about 70 cfs today. The river's settling out now after the big spike of a few days ago. The dryfly fishing has become much more consistent once again and a variety of dries from caddis to hoppers to mayfly cripples will get the fish looking. The prospecting hopper/dropper rig is still working VERY well for us and at this point, is our first dryfly choice unless conditions or hatches suggest otherwise. This rig has been working well to motivate fish that hadn't even been rising. Tandem nymph rigs in mid river seams and drop offs are still going to produce for you. Slow moving, dark bodied streamers are still a good option for those of us who like to use depth charges. The evening caddis hatch/fishing has been very consistent in the warm evening temperatures. Beginning about 6:30 or 7, many of the slower backwaters and tail out riffles will come alive with caddis and fish feeding on 'em. Sparkle caddis and X caddis have been a good option once the naturals begin popping.
