Sol Duc River - January 3rd, 2005
supplied by: Fishing Northwest
FISHING: Fair
The BIG Picture: We are experiencing a cold high pressure front at the moment, area rivers are cold and clear and the Steelhead are a bit on the persnickety side. There are a few nice wild fish showing up in all of the Peninsula streams and there are still good numbers of hatchery steelhead in the Quillayute River system. FLY FISHING REPORT: The Rivers: Just had a decent day in the upper Sol-Duc R. I hosted "Andy" from Sweden, who had spent 11 days previously trying to get a Winter Steelhead to smack his "Shwung" bugs....to no avail. We pinned 3 and landed 2 fatty chromers..."Nymphing"! The bug of choice was a champagne/hot pink "Crusher" (thanks Gus).
Sol-Duc (sole~duck) River-- Same, Same, has been slow, Steelhead fishing in here is typically a bit soft until mid-January so this is not THE place to be for now. Sol-Duc River Cam [CLICK HERE]

Sol Duc River - December 27th, 2004
supplied by: Fishing Northwest
FISHING: Poor
The BIG Picture: We are getting wailed on by Mother Nature, the rivers are going to be a mess for the next couple of days. There is a very good chance though that when this all settles down we will have a fresh dose of Steelhead in the Hoh river and in the Queets River. Fresh WDFG "Hatchery Steelhead" are still moving into the Bogachiel River and into the lower Calawah River. The holiday crowds are starting to thin making for a bit more elbow room up near the "Hatchery Hole" and the "Snag Hole". FLY FISHING REPORT: 12/25/04: The Rivers: Rivers are going to be in rough shape for a few days but there are still plenty of hatchery Steelhead around. Rex Mauer had a fine hatchery specimen (11 lbs) take a swung fly presented on his Spey rod in the Tail-out of the Dimmel hole and we also did pick up a small fish (5 lbs) nymphing but it is slow fish'n right now. We've been finding most of our fish nymphing. . Here is an awesome shot of Dr Dave and son Phil with Phil's first Steelhead.
Saltwater: (Fly Fishing) Excellent!! Just got off the phone with Cap't Wolf....if you live in the Seattle Metro area you must sample this unique and very productive fly fishery. The species available right now are Sea-Run Cutthroat and resident Silver Salmon. Please contact Cap't Wolf @ 253-863-0711 or e-mail him @ capttwolf@comcast.net I guarantee you'll have an awesome trip.
Bogachiel River --Really roll'n high and off color. should fish well as soon as it settles back into shape. By far and away the best action has been up near the hatchery. CLICK HERE: To go to Bogachiel River water level gage
Calawah River-- Really came up in volume today due to the recent storm. Most if not all of the Steelhead right now are located in the lower section of this river, still decent numbers of bright fish moving in here. *(The lower section includes the South and North Pond pools and is typically the last 3/4 mile section of the Calawah R. upstream from the confluence with the Bogachiel R.).
HOH RIVER -- Looked awesome yesterday, about 2 ft - 3ft of visibility and I actually saw a few fish roll at the mouth of Willoughby Crk.....But today the old Hoh woofed and it looks like we'll be waiting another 4-5 days before it is fishable. Should be decent numbers of Steelhead in here when it does settle back down. Queets River-- Out of shape for a while, has been slow.
Quillayute River -- High and mighty right now but it has been a real productive destination for Winter Steelhead fishermen.
Lower Quinault River--Same, The Steelhead fishing is just OK, Cook crk has slowed to a crawl the past few days. To fish this river you will need a Quinault Nation licensed fishing guide. Please Contact: www.lettypotter.com give them a call and I'm sure you'll have a fine time
Sooes ("soo-yes") River, Neah Bay-- Steelhead are in. You will need a tribal permit to fish this little river, available in Neah Bay at Washburns General store 360-645-2211.

Sol Duc River - December 13th, 2004
supplied by: Fishing Northwest
FISHING: Poor
The BIG Picture: We are getting pounded with heaps and gallons of rain right now, the rivers are swollen and un-fishable for a few days. There is light at the end of the tunnel though as great numbers of hatchery/planted Steelhead have made their way in. The traditional zones such as the Salmon river / Queets R. confluence has been excellent, the Bogachiel R. and lower Calawah R. has been decent, The Quinault R. down by Cooks crk. hatchery has been loaded and the Hoh R. recently had a run of Hatchery Steelhead move in.

FISHING: Fair
FLY FISHING REPORT: 12/03/04: The Rivers: Same, rivers in great shape and the Winter hatchery-run Steelhead are in. There are fishable numbers of hatchery Steelhead in the Bogachiel and Calawah rivers.
The Lake: (Fly Fishing) Same, Really Outstanding!! remains excellent, small "Seal Buggers", Clouser Minnows and "cone head Wooley Buggers" are the ticket. Many of the Steelhead are weighing in excess of 6 lbs!! and the "Donaldson's" are pushing 3.5-4 lbs!!
Sol-Duc (sole~duck) River-- Great shape today however Steelhead fishing in here is typically a bit soft until January so this is not THE place to be for at least a month.

Sol Duc River - November 24th, 2004
supplied by: Fishing Northwest
FISHING: Good
It's tweener time right now, between the Fall Salmon season and the Winter Steelhead season. There are fishable numbers of hatchery Steelhead in the Bogachiel and Calawah rivers and the numbers of Silver Salmon in the upper Sol-Duc R. is still very good but they are getting "ratty".
Excellent condition today, still a good number of Silver Salmon in the Sappho run but they are in various stages of decomposition, and there are still a very few fresh fish moving up but for the most part you'll find the Silvers to be a bit on the dark side (relative to coastal river fish). There are a few King Salmon still being hooked and released but overall the King Salmon are done for the year. Good Steelhead fishing in this river is still a month and a half away.
