RECORDED:
45 °
FISHING: Great
River is down and in great shape with 3 ft vis at 11 boards.
Winter Steelhead spread out from mouth all the way to snider bridge. Hatchery fish from mouth to hatchery. Look for some early wild fish as you fish for the hatchery fish. Most wild fish will be in upper river. Fish plugs or sidedrift eggs and cover lots of water.
Remember that Hatchery to snider bridge is selective regulations, no bait, single barbless hook, no retension of wild fish.
Pay attention to wild fish by looking at left ventral fin as these are Snider creek broad stock hatchery fish and may be retained as hatchery fish.
Fair amount of Fresh Kings in the river still but these fish CAN NOT be RETAINED. It closed Dec 1.

Sol Duc River - October 31st, 2006
supplied by: Angler's Guide Service
RECORDED:
27 °
FISHING: Fair
The Sol Duc is still real low. Even with the low water a few salmon have moved into the lower river.
A few Silver and Kings are pushing up the river. Fish very small Spinners in Dark colors. With a good rain this one will explode with fish.
The Cutthroat fishing is still awesome with dry flies in any October caddis pattern.
There are still a few Steelhead in the upper river. Fish small Flies or Beads for these. If you are gear fishing then go with small spinners, jigfs or baits.
WE NEED SOME RAIN!!!!!

Sol Duc River - October 17th, 2006
supplied by: Angler's Guide Service
RECORDED:
55 °
FISHING: Fair
The Sol Duc is at all time low with very little rain. But it has not stopped the fish for the guy who doesn't mind working for them.
Cutthroat trout have been good and getting better. Fish small spiders or muddlers early and late in day. October Cadis have started to show up so switch to large october caddis during the middle of day. For the nymph fisherman you might try caddis pupa or small glo bugs behind salmon.
Summer Steelhead are in the river and still snapping ealy and late in the day. Fish small dark flies skated just under surface has been good. Nymph fishing has been good with large stone fly nymphs or a small cotton candy.
Summer Silvers have sneaked into the river but are awful spookey. Fish early or late with small Fish Finders in Pink, Pink/purple, purple egg sucking leech or black/purple or black/kelly green.
Very few Fall Salmon have come into the lower end of the river.
Look for rain, and fish bites will go up.

Sol Duc River - May 2nd, 2006
supplied by: Puget Sound Fly Company, LLC
RECORDED:
55 °
FISHING: Fair
Clark and I fished the Sol Duc River with Jim Kerr (http://www.jimkerrguides.com/) on Sunday.
Conditions were decent, if you didn’t count the complete lack of Springers. We walked in and floated a long stretch of the Sol Duc. We fished hard in all the ‘right’ places, we caught nothing. Despite the lack of Springers the river was loaded with fresh Steelhead ‘reds’, which was a very positive sign in our book.
There are many good guides working today. If you have found one who you enjoy fishing with, don’t loose the number. If you haven’t, Jim is a guide who we recommend highly. On top of being an expert fisherman and oarsmen, he is also (more importantly) a great guy to spend a day on the river with.

Sol Duc River - April 2nd, 2006
supplied by: Angler's Guide Service
RECORDED:
45 °
FISHING: Excellent
Sol-Duc is running at 7 boards and 6 feet visibilty. The fish are spread out from the top to bottom. The warm weather has really turned the fish on. There fresh fish all the way through the system. The Spring Chinook are showing up in real good numbers from the bottom all the way to the hatchery.
Gear Tactics:
The three primary gear tactics consist of Plug Pulling, Side Drifting and Float fishing. If you are going to pull plugs then stick with small plugs in Silver, Green, blue, Black, Purple or Dull Orange. If side drifting is your game then go light on the lead and small baits. We fish a size single 4 or 2 hook with a small cluster of eggs or for a change up try some prawn meet soaked in egg juice. For floats fish size 1/8th ounce jigs in Pink, Pink/white,Pink/black, Purple/pink and the Anglers Guide Service custom jig. You can also fish bait, like eggs, sand shrimp or squid under the float.
Spring Chinook
For Springers use plugs like K-13or 15's in Blue Scale, Silver Chartruese bill, Green Pirate, Cerise or Mad Clown. You might also backtroll diver in bait with sandshrimp, eggs or a combo of sandshrimp and eggs. Floats and eggs have been effective this year while fishing for steelhead. Concentrate on the a little deeper water with some good current. The Spring Chinook numbers will increase more over the next few days.
Fly Tactics:
Swing flies in Black, Purple, orange or Blood Red. I like the Steel Wooly, General Practioner, Hare Ball leech and Articulated Leeches. If you are a Nymph fisherman the try a small lead eyed fly in pink or purple with a glo bug or troutbead dropper .
With this fresh squirt of water it should really heat up as we move into the peak of the Native run..
