Turneffe Atoll - June 22nd, 2008

FISHING: Great
As a matter of policy to ensure privacy, Turneffe Flats does not use last names of guests in our fishing reports.
Week of May June 15-21
Weather Conditions: Mostly clear skies with some high, hazy clouds in the beginning of the week; occasional spotty clouds around the end of the week, but no rain on the island. Winds: 3-5 mph on Sun-Tue, 10-15mph Wed.-Sun. Air Temp.: High 80s most of the week. Water Temp.: In the 80s and good visibility all week. Tides: Low mid-day pushing later every day throughout the week. Moon Phase: The full moon brought in an abundance of life to the atoll (tarpon included)
As Turneffe Turned. Our four anglers were comprised of two father-son combinations that ended up targeting two different species. Returning guests Andrew and Gram fished with Capt all week and primarily targeted tarpon on the fly. On the first day, Andrew and Gram tried the flats for bonefish, but the tides where not ideal for wading so they hit up the inner lagoon and searched for permit. With no signs of the permit (yet) they both decided that tarpon fishing was what they would do for the rest of the week.
On Monday, Capt guided them to a spot where they saw a school rolling and working a string of islands on the southern portion of the atoll. “Drew” (the father) hooked and landed a 140-plus pound tarpon. His son Chris hooked another tarpon on Monday, but did not land it. “They were rolling all around us, and swimming under the boat” Gram told us. It was not until Thursday that, after many hook-ups and un-hook-ups, Gram landed his tarpon, about a 100-pounder.
The other father-son combo, Chris and Richard from the UK, focused mainly on landing their first permit on the fly. Being that they had never even previously seen a permit, and as Dickens would have written, neither had any great expectations, which probably helped them in the heat of the moment. They both caught some bonefish on Sunday but saw no signs of permit. On Monday, they found a school tailing on the inner lagoon and Richard (the father) landed his first, about 100 yards off the mangroves. It was estimated to weigh 15 pounds. It was not until the last day (right before a small change in weather) that the permit started to bite again and Richard caught another permit and his son Chris (who in his spare time manages a fishing website: http://www.completefisher.com/) landed two smaller ones of about 10 pounds.
All-in-all, it was a week of great weather, good times, good-to-very-good fishing and a hat full of memories to last a lifetime.
If you are still trying to figure out an appropriate gift for that recent college graduate – maybe the last time you guys can get together before career, marriage and grandchildren loom on the horizon – we are offering a Fall Special you might want to consider. FISHING: Great
As a matter of policy to ensure privacy, Turneffe Flats does not use last names of guests in our fishing reports.
Week of June 7-14
Weather Conditions: Overcast and winds 10-15 mph in beginning of week, clearing and calming down to 5-10 last part of week. Air Temp.: Mid 80s all week. Water Temp.: 80s and good visibility all week. Tides: Quality fishing tides this week with high tides being mid-day pushing later every day throughout the week. Moon Phase: June 10th first quarter Bob and Audrey from California fished with Capt. and Mark with a highlight of the week being Bob nailing 10 bonefish one day. What’s so “highlight” about that? Ten bonefish in a day isn’t going to make the 5 o’clock news at Turneffe Flats. The rest of the story is that the 10 bones were on Bob’s 96th birthday! Audrey (no age given) kept up with Bob and caught a couple of bonefish every day.
Chuck and Dick from Michigan fished with Dubs all week. Simply put, they both came to Belize to catch their first permit on a flyrod and both of them, after some hard work and looking for fish for two days, accomplished their goals.
Our combos of the week John and Roxanne from Florida and father and son Jay and David from Texas split half their week fishing and the other half diving. John also caught his first permit on a fly rod and Roxanne caught two on a spinning rod.
With 96-year old Bob showing us all how it should be done, the fishing Karma was in full effect this week! Happy birthday, again, Bob.
Time is slipping away, but we are offering a Fall Special you might want to consider for yourself and, well, someone special. Our Fishing Package is a 2-for-1 at the Single Supplement Package price of $2,444.21 per angler.
Both Fall Specials are valid August 30 to December 20.

FISHING: Excellent
As a matter of policy to ensure privacy, Turneffe Flats does not use last names of guests in our fishing reports.
Week of May 24-31
Weather Conditions: Sunny with scattered clouds: Some spread out big lumpy clouds that gave us 2-3 short rain showers early in the week, but great sun in between. Rain all day Friday.
Winds: 5-15 mph
Air Temp.: Mid-80s all week.
Water Temp.: 80s and good visibility all week until rain on Friday.
Tides: Quality fishing tides this week with high tides being mid-day pushing later every day throughout the week.
Moon Phase: Tues. 27th Last Quarter
We had an “almost Grand Slam” by Dan B. from Nevada with a permit and bonefish caught one day and a tarpon by 1:00 the next afternoon; and a “for real” Grand Slam – Chuck S. from Kansas landing a permit, tarpon, and bonefish with his guide Dion. The bite seemed to be turned on right before the rain came through on Friday and John B from Nevada took advantage of this by hooking and landing his first permit on a fly.
Bob O. from Calif. asked his son where he wanted a fishing trip this year and Eddie said “flats fishing.” Both Bob and Eddie, new to saltwater fly-fishing, but accomplished at fishing the technical tailwaters of the American west, had a smooth transition into angling for tailing bonefish. They both had their share of spooked and broken-off bonefish; but they landed enough to get them hooked on the sport of flats fishing.
Another father son combo, Todd and Don from Florida were with us, but this time it was the son asking the father where he wanted to go. Todd and Don fished for permit most of the week with Don hooking three and Todd one, but neither getting a fish to the boat. They both caught bones every day and even landed seven on Friday in the rain … on the flat in front of the lodge. Every night Todd could be found casting off the dock with TF’s general manager Kevin Bonasera and guest Chris L. judging who could cast further and tell bigger fish lies then the other. Chris, from Virginia also targeted permit all week with Dubs and had numerous good “shots,” but never didn’t get one to the boat. Ah, the agony and ecstasy of permit fishing!
“I didn’t strip-set hard enough,” “the fly just came unbuttoned on his third jump,” “he was too big to land” are typical reasons for not getting a tarpon all the way to the boat. Joe U. and David V. from New York targeted all species and ended up jumping several tarpon; with David landing two. They both caught bonefish and hooked a couple permit, two big snapper, and a big jack crevalle on their last day. Mark, their guide, told us that they jumped a tarpon as big as he had ever seen, “close to 200 pounds” on their last day.
There are not many other angler challenges that can compare to hooking and fighting a tarpon. We are starting to see more of them around the atoll. Most anglers that did not land a tarpon still hooked at least one. Hank B from Nevada just walked into the office and said he hooked a tarpon again this morning; and walked out to fish the flat in front of the main lodge to look for bonefish or maybe a cruising permit.
John M had “excellent bonefishing” and some “exiting shots at permit, but no cigar until now” as he puffed on his Cuban rolled stogie. John also jumped a couple tarpon.
All in all, it was a good week of fishing and great camaraderie.
We are offering a Fall Special you might want to consider for yourself and, well, someone special. Our Fishing Package is a 2-for-1 at the Single Supplement Package price of $2,444.21 per angler.
Both Fall Specials are valid August 30 to December 20.

FISHING: Great
As a matter of policy to ensure privacy, Turneffe Flats does not use last names of guests in our fishing reports.
Week of May 17-24
Weather Conditions: Sunny weather with slight haze due to seasonal burning of sugar cane fields.
Winds: 5-10 mph Sunday, 3-5 mph Tues-Thursday, 5-10 mph Friday-Sunday
Air Temp.: High 80s all week.
Water Temp.: 80s and good visibility.
Tides: High tide in the early morning and falling most of the day early in the week. Tide improved as the week went on with high tide midday by end of the week.
Moon Phase: Full Moon Monday May 19th
With weather cooperating the entire week, the anglers that considered themselves somewhat new to fly-fishing had the chance to learn a little bit about the basics of the game from sighting to casting. The first couple of days, Peter Sr. and Jr from New York, who fished with Mark, gained experience by catching bonefish both from the bow of the boat to “mudding” fish. They used a #6 green Gotcha with lead eyes to get the fly down quickly and both landed four bonefish their first day. Throughout the week their skills progressed to walking the flats; and both hooked and landed bonefish. Peter Sr. also enjoyed trolling for barracuda on the way back to the lodge every evening and told a story over dinner about a ’cuda that jumped 20 feet three times.
James and Richard B. from California, were also new to fly-fishing and the saltwater game and after a few days of casting clinics were catching right on. Being neighbors to Steve and Gina Abel [of Abel Reels fame] made it almost a prerequisite that James and Richard fly-fished, but Richard did find some time to get the spin rod out as well. They both caught their first bonefish on a fly and we expect to see them both back double hauling and shooting line across the flats next time they visit. Steve and Gina targeted permit and tarpon all week with Gina landing one permit and Steve a nice 80-pound tarpon on one of his hand-tied Abel Anchovies.
John and Deb Flick, owners of Duranglers Fly Shop in Durango, CO, and Guide Service in Durango, Colorado, started out their week warming up on bonefishing. Deb, being used to casting dry flies off a drift boat, worked on her casting and was quoted at saying that she would "catch at least one bonefish a day." After she caught four the first day she said she has “credit" for future days. John spent most of his time dedicated to permit fishing and had at many good shots at feeding permit, but never did get one hooked up.
Another father-son combo, Mike and Pat S., from Maine, came in right from the start having preference to wade the flats for tailing bonefish. With guide Eddie having a Ph.D. in wading the flats for bonefish we found this to be a great match.
Mike’s son Pat spent most of the time being very patient and casting at fish he had never seen before. Both Mike and Pat are patient and attentive anglers willing to learn. They found early success in landing their first bonefish on the flats and improving their skills throughout the week.
We are offering a Fall Special you might want to consider for yourself and, well, someone special. Our Fishing Package is a 2-for-1 at the Single Supplement Package price of $2,444.21 per angler.
There is also a 2-for-1 Dive Instruction Special during which two new divers can do their Open Water Referral for the price of one.
Both Fall Specials are valid August 30 to December 20.

Weather Conditions: Nice sunny conditions all week.
Winds: Sat-Thurs: light winds out of the east southeast at 2-8 mph. Friday, the breeze picked up to 15-18 mph, but remained from the southeast
Air Temp.: Mid to high 80s all week.

Moon Phase: 70% to 90% full moon (called the “Waxing Gibbous” Moon)
The Deschutes Angler fly shop, owned and operated by John and Amy Hazel, hosted a group of anglers mostly from Oregon this week. John had the tough job of hosting the trip while Amy held down the fort at home. John had a 100-pound tarpon almost to the boat after a long fight; and Gordon N., one of Deschutes River Anglers’ veteran guides, had a fantastic week landing many bonefish, hooking a couple of tarpon, and landing a great permit, estimated at 30 pounds! Andrew, the fly shop manager, enjoyed his first saltwater experience guided by Willie and learned much about fishing the fishing the flats.
Others in the group had shots at big tarpon and caught many bonefish. For Ian, the week’s highlight was landing a permit on the flats with a small olive Velcro crab with fishing partner Lynn and guide Capt. Ian told the story of casting to the tailing permit in the low light of the evening in the surf and seeing it dart across waves and into the deep when he hooked it. Bill L. is quoted at saying, “These bones run better then anything I've ever seen,” describing his 7-pounder. Wes, his fishing partner the first day, told a story about one large school of 30-40 bonefish that kept circling around the flat and allowing him to catch a couple out of the same school. Thanks to all the Deschutes Anglers for a great week!
Alex, from England, fished by himself with Pops all week. He spent the fist part of each day permit fishing and the last part of each day bonefishing. Alex had shots at permit each day but unfortunately didn’t land one. He landed a few bonefish each day,.
John and Ted fished with Michael all week and had good luck catching bonefish. Both John and Ted also spent some time permit fishing with both getting the shots that they deserved throughout the week. Congratulations to John for joining the many others who caught their first permit-on-the-fly at Turneffe Flats.

FISHING: Great
As a matter of policy to ensure privacy, Turneffe Flats does not use last names of guests in our fishing reports.
Week of May 3 -10
Weather Conditions: Sunny and light winds for most of the week.
Winds: Light southeast trade winds
Air Temp.: Mid to high 80s all week.
Water Temp.: Low 80s and good visibility.
Tides: First part of week had high tides in the morning and progressing to mid-day by the end of the week. Good late day low tides all week.
Moon Phase: New Moon May 5th.
Cynthia and Ingrid from Texas put together a Turneffe Flats fishing trip with and for their husbands, John and Jay. It was to be their introduction to the joys of saltwater fishing in Belize. Both Cynthia and Ingrid caught their first bonefish plus a couple of extremely toothy barracuda on the flats with spinning rods during their three day outing. Both John and Jay caught a handful of bonefish every day and look forward to coming back for a full week of fly-fishing next time.
Sandy G. from New York returned for the second time this year to make this his 5th trip to Turneffe Flats. He fished with Mark and spent the majority of his time in the bow of his boat targeting permit, tarpon, and snook. In the early part of the week Sandy hooked into a couple of tarpon and caught a snook on a Deceiver.
Ian B. from Ohio had the advantage of having many years of saltwater fly-fishing under his belt and it showed in everything he did. Guided by Capt. and paired with fishing partner Harry, they both found luck fishing to mudding bonefish from the bow of their boat, as well as targeting schools of permit in the inner lagoon mangroves. Ian landed two permit and Harry nailed one.
Brian Y. from Alaska fished with Dubs all week and focused on permit. Brian spent most of his time targeting the permit along the mangroves of the inner lagoon and had great success. Brian caught his first permit at Turneffe Flats four years ago and says that he remembers every one after that.
David and Dawn from Texas, having fished for bonefish in the Bahamas, soon realized that fishing the flats on Turneffe was a lot different. David is a fine fly-fisher and soon adapted his knowledge of the game and found success, landing bonefish every day. The change of latitude gave Dawn a change of attitude and she found time between spin fishing to bonefish and taking it easy back at the resort under a palm tree.
Jim W. and Bob K. from Texas fished with Dion all week. With his help, they soon both landed several bones and learned a lot along the way. Bob’s son Dan from Calif. is what we consider a true permit fishing enthusiast. He spent most of his time on the bow of the boat with Pops polling the skiff, stalking/hunting for small groups of feeding or cruising permit. Dan hooked two permit on the flats and landed one. Dan got creative the last three days and had a total blast with ’cuda on the spinning rod. He bagged some really cool mutton snapper out of the mangroves with big lead-eyed size 2/0 chartreuse and white half n' halfs that he tied. He turned a tarpon with a red and black toad fly, but the tarpon missed the fly! Dan also had lots of success every time he went to the flats bonefishing. The #8 chartreuse body with olive rabbit fur wing and micro rubber legs was his go-to-fly.

FISHING: Excellent
As a matter of policy to ensure privacy, Turneffe Flats does not use last names of guests in our fishing reports.
Week of April 26 – May 3
Weather Conditions: Sunny and light winds for most of the week.
Winds: Sat-Thurs: light winds out of the east southeast at 2-8 mph. Friday the breeze picked up to 15-18 mph but remained from the southeast.
Air Temp.: Mid- to high-80s all week.
Water Temp.: Low 80s and good visibility.
Tides: First part of week had high tides mid-day getting later as the week progressed. The last part of week we had high tides late in the evening and early morning around 7am.
Moon Phase: Last Quarter April 28th .
Long time return guest Mel H. from Massachusetts guided by Mark targeted tarpon 50%, bonefish 35%, and permit 15% of the time. His favorite fly for tarpon was the Gartside Secret Stuff Minnow (GSSM)! Mel also tried his Gartside’s Gurgler on snook. Mel jumped a few tarpon this week in the 30-45 pound range and even had a tarpon hit his fly when his fly was just hanging in the water. Early in the week, Mel hooked several larger bonefish with the one taping out at 24-inches and about 10-pounds. Mark has yet to name the his new fly they used to catch most these bones, but it has small bead chain eyes on the bend of the hook, pearl diamond braid body, and green marabou and crystal flash for tail. Oh, you don’t want to forget to mention that Mel also caught a nice permit on a squimp pattern also tied by Mark.
We had a great group of anglers from the Seattle area that rotated between several guides. The week was highlighted by Greg and Harry’s epic permit day with Pops when they each landing 3! Pops said he is not sure he has seen a better day of permit fishing! Their first permit was caught on a Merkin Crab and later they used an EP Merkin. The rest of the group landed plenty of bonefish during the week, but didn’t have as much luck with permit. Reed S., the group leader, jumped four tarpon with his Black Death fly. Andrew mentioned that he was very happy to have Dubs help him with his casting and felt that his casting and sight fishing abilities improved substantially throughout the week.
Ralph and Nick from Utah fished with their Eddie and had a good week wading the flats. They gained a lot of experience fishing on some of our tougher flats, but were able to hook bonefish every day.
Rich M. and Less M. from Oregon fished with Turneffe Flats for the 5th time and requested Michael as their guide. They came primarily to target permit and had plenty of good shots, but no hookups. They had some good days bonefishing and Rich’s two favorite flies were the “Chicken Poop” in a white #8, and the “Egghead Bitters” in Olive.
Sandy and Med from California fished with Willie all week and also managed to Scuba dive the Blue Hole. Having been on multiple bonefishing trips, Sandy and Med mentioned that their first day at Turneffe Flats was their best fishing days ever. They found a school of bones on the bite which they coined “Willie’s Aquarium.”
It was fun week with some past guests visiting as well as some very enjoyable first time visitors.
